Specific extruder

By this process it is possible achieve metallic effects similar to painted surfaces. Its popularity is therefore likely to increase in the near future. Specifically, extruded semifinished product displays optical qualities that are in some cases superior to a painted surface. [Pg.217]

As the numerical simulation of flows inside a compound extruder is a complex task, engineers usually do not simulate complete units but concentrate on functional zones. Due to the modularity of a compound extruder, a wide variety of configurations is possible for any functional zone. ID simulations calculate averaged functions or determine an overview of a specific configuration on an empirical level. They are used to select a specific extruder setup to be simulated with finite element (FEM) or boundary element (BEM) methods. [Pg.285]

By careful process monitoring we can often detect the effects of wear. The process parameters that are affected by wear are meit temperature, output, and motor ioad. As wear progresses, the quality of the extruded product tends to deteriorate. This may manifest itself as discoloration, streaks, discolored specks, holes, etc. ft is very important to monitor the specific energy consumption (SEC) and specific extruder throughput (SET) because changes in these parameters often correiate with wear. SEC is the ratio of motor power divided by the throughput, ft is the mechanical power consumed per unit mass of plastic. The SEC tends to correiate with the melt temperature. The SEC is normally expressed in kWh/kg. A typicai vaiue of the SEC is 0.25 kWh/hr for extrusion of polyoiefins. [Pg.850]

Output rate is a measure of the throughput rate or pounds/h that can be delivered by a specific extruder size or diameter. [Pg.240]

A typical assignment at this point would be to compute the operating pressure and output for a specific extruder/die combination. By introducing the extrusion process over a suite of three classes, the students gain a much deeper appreciation and understanding of this most basic polymer processing operation. [Pg.517]

Thermoplastic urethane adhesives may be processed into an adhesive film. I,amination of two substrates can, in theory, be done immediately, but the film is often extruded onto one substrate, covered by a release liner, and allowed to cool. Crystallization follows to create a non-tacky film that may be cut into specific shapes. The release liner is then removed, and the shaped adhesive can be heat-activated on one substrate, using infrared lamps. The second substrate is then nipped under pressure, followed by a cooling press to speed crystallization. Once the backbone has crystallized, the bond should be strong. [Pg.793]

As normally polymerized, PVF melts between IH5 and 210 °C and contains 12 18% inverted monomer units ft is normally considered a thermoplastic, but because of its instability above its melting point, it cannot be processed by conventional thermoplastic techniques Instead it is generally extruded into films in a solvent swollen (organosol) form and the solvent is subsequently evaporated and recovered Such films can be onented further to achieve specific mechanical properties PVF films are exceptionally weather and radiabon resistant considenng their modest fluonne content PVF is insoluble below 100 °C but, at higher temperatures, it dissolves in polar solvents like amides, ketones, tetramethylene sulfone, and tetramethylurea Resistance to acids and bases at room temperature IS good [1, 29 ... [Pg.1111]

The blends prepared by twin-screw extruder with two different draw ratios were extruded with the Brabender single-screw extruder at temperatures ranging from 180 280°C, The sample designation and specific processing conditions are given in Table 1. [Pg.625]

A carbon rod is used as a current collector for the positive electrode in dry cells. It is made by heating an extruded mixture of carbon (petroleum coke, graphite) and pitch which serves as a binder. A heat treatment at temperatures of about 1100 °C is used to carbonize the pitch and to produce a solid structure with low resistance. For example, Takahashi [23] reported that heat treatment reduced the specific resistance from 1 Q cm to 3.6xlO"1Qcm and the density increased from 1.7 to 2.02 gem- 1. Fischer and Wissler [24] derived an experimental relationship [Eq. (1)] between the electrical conductivity, compaction pressure, and properties of graphite powder ... [Pg.237]

Computer-aided flow-simulation programs are also available for dies. All the programs can successfully predict a certain amount of shrinkage under specific conditions that can be applied to experience. The actual shrinkage is finally determined after molding or extruding the products. When not in spec process control changes can meet the requirements unless some drastic error had been included in the analysis. [Pg.443]

MIL-P-47136 covers one formulation of plasticized PVC used in the production of flexible tubing, cord, film, sheet, and other various extruded shapes. The Specification requirements are concerned with electrical, mechanical and physical properties and shelf life Refs 1) D. Haft, PATR1592 (1946) 2) H.J. [Pg.832]

To the general public, the term plastic has become s Tionymous with polymer. More precisely, a plastic is the type of pol Tner that hardens on cooling or on evaporation of solvent, allowing it to be molded or extruded into specific shapes or spread into thin films. [Pg.913]

Vitamins, microorganisms, and enzymes are susceptible to inactivation or destruction in an extruder. Removal of microorganisms and enzymes is desirable in most cases, but vitamin retention is important for nutritional considerations (Bjorck and Asp, 1983). Survival of vitamins increases if moisture is increased and if temperature, screw speed, and specific energy input decrease (Killeit, 1994). Vitamin loss may be compensated by adding more than the necessary amount of preextrusion or by applying a vitamin coating, filling, or spray postextrusion. [Pg.187]
