Specific cleaning

The procedure for the determination of total secondary alkanesulfonates with TLC and of total monosulfonates specified as homologs and isomers by derivatization GC-MS is shown in Fig. 18. The specific clean-up for sewage sludges prior to total secondary alkanesulfonate determination is outlined in Fig. 19. TLC conditions are given in Table 9. The limits of the quantification of secondary alkanesulfonates are summarized in Table 10. For eight samples and one operator the TLC time schedule is 4 days sample pretreatment and sublation, clean-up, TLC performance, and quantitative evaluation of TLC [24]. 

Fouling of the reference electrode or the reference side of a combination electrode is a common problem in soil pH measurements. Fouling can be caused by salts, organic matter, and clay. Each electrode manufacturer will provide specific cleaning procedures that help to keep electrodes functioning properly however, in many cases, no amount of cleaning is effective and the electrodes need to be replaced. 

As provider of Chemical Leasing services PERO Innovative Services was able to include in the project all peripheral devices necessary for the supply, reconditioning, recovery and maintenance of the chemicals. The equipment was engineered based on the principle of cost reduction with regard to chemicals consumption, energy consumption, supply of spare parts and service. The solvent and the stabilisers used were adapted to the specific cleaning needs of Automobiltechnik Blau. 

Drum dried flakes find their biggest outlet in industrial detergent mixtures where the original 30 to 90% active flakes are frequently dry-mixed with alkali builders for specific cleaning applications. 

Problems with insulin delivery in implanted pumps are difficult to correct. A change in Hoechst 21 pH-neutral semisynthetic insulin 400 U/ml in accordance with regulations of the European Pharmacopoeia (SEDA-20, 397) resulted in more frequent clogging when this insulin was used in the Minimed 2001 implantable pump (MIP 2001). From October 1995 to October 1996, 17 pumps were implanted (241). The refilling period was reduced from 90 to 30-45 days and the reservoirs were washed with insulin-free buffer before each refill. Backflow was seen in 13 pumps after a mean period of 7.2 months. Modification of the manufacturing process produced 21PH ETP insulin (human semisynthetic insulin, Genapol-stabilized) 400 U/ml, Hoechst, with improved stability since July 1997. All pumps were specifically cleaned before the new insulin was used for refill. The refill period was increased from 38 to 78 days. In 16 pumps, only one backflow was seen after 14 months. 

This section will address a typical FDA 483 observation made regarding a specific cleaning program at an actual pharmaceutical company. 

To use an ultrasonic cleaner, immerse the item to be cleaned in the cleaning solution within the device s tank. There are general-purpose and industrial-strength cleaning solutions as well as specific cleaning solutions for jewelry, oxides, and buffing compound removers. Turn the ultrasonic cleaner on for several minutes, and see if your item is clean. If not, repeat the process and/or try an alternate cleaning method. After an item has been cleaned, rinse as you would with a soap and water wash. 

A procedure whose effectiveness has been proven by a documented program providing a high degree of assurance that a specific cleaning procedure, when performed appropriately, will consistently clean a particular piece of equipment to a predetermined level of cleanliness.

An ATSDR scientist provided one additional comment on Chapter 4, suggesting that ATSDR reconsider including discussions on specific clean-up levels for PCBs in soils (page 302), since some readers might infer that the listed levels should apply to all PCB-contaminated sites. If ATSDR retains the information on soil clean-up levels, one panelist recommended that the profile indicate the soil depth over which these levels apply. 

As will be seen in this discussion, the evolution of cleaners developed from simple soap powders to liquid formulations to products that are more specialized. All-purpose cleaners are the backbone of this development. Along with specialized formulas for specific cleaning problems, in some cases these products are augmented by specialized packaging. Generally, the packaging contributes more to the convenience of the product than the efficacy. 

Specific cleaning instructions for packaging equipment should be available. 

A Class I cabinet, used properly, can provide excellent protection for the research worker, but it does not provide any protection for the active work area within the cabinet, since the air flowing into the cabinet is dirty air, i.e., ambient air from the room that has not been specifically cleaned.
