A complete set of references to all sources of data are included, so that the reader can go to the original source if more detail is needed. We have also tried to include references to more advanced and specialized texts, monographs, reviews, and other compilations that the reader who is looking for more detail, can go to for supplementary reading. [Pg.683]

There have been many reports of insect pest species developing resistance to OP insecticides, to the extent that control of the pest has been lost. A detailed account of resistance lies ontside the scope of the present book, and readers are referred to specialized texts by Georghion and Saito (1983), Brown (1971), and Otto and Weber (1992). A few examples will now be considered that illustrate the mechanisms by which insects become resistant to OP insecticides. [Pg.211]

The limitation of the above analysis to the case of homonuclear diatomic molecules was made by imposing the relation Haa = Hbb> as in this case the two nuclei are identical. More generally, Haa and for heteronuclear diatomic molecules Eq. (134) cannot be simplified (see problem 25). However, the polarity of the bond can be estimated in this case. The reader is referred to specialized texts on molecular orbital theory for a development of this application. [Pg.164]

Partial derivatives, as introduced in Section 2.12 are of particular importance in thermodynamics. The various state functions, whose differentials are exact (see Section 3.5), are related via approximately 1010 expressions involving 720 first partial derivatives Although some of these relations are not of practical interest, many are. It is therefore useful to develop a systematic method of deriving them. Hie method of Jacobians is certainly the most widely applied to the solution of this problem. It will be only briefly described here. For a more advanced treatment of the subject and its application to thermodynamics, die reader is referred to specialized texts. [Pg.295]

The skeptical reader may reasonably ask from where we have obtained the above rules and where is the proof for the relation with thermodynamics and for the meaning ascribed to the individual terms of the PF. The ultimate answer is that there is no proof. Of course, the reader might check the contentions made in this section by reading a specialized text on statistical thermodynamics. He or she will find the proof of what we have said. However, such proof will ultimately be derived from the fundamental postulates of statistical thermodynamics. These are essentially equivalent to the two properties cited above. The fundamental postulates are statements regarding the connection between the PF and thermodynamics on the one hand (the famous Boltzmann equation for entropy), and the probabilities of the states of the system on the other. It just happens that this formulation of the postulates was first proposed for an isolated system—a relatively simple but uninteresting system (from the practical point of view). The reader interested in the subject of this book but not in the foundations of statistical thermodynamics can safely adopt the rules given in this section, trusting that a proof based on some... [Pg.20]

A more detailed account of the Schrodinger equation can be found in physical chemistry textbooks such as those of Hinshelwood (1951) and Atkins (1978), or in more specialized texts such as that of Hirschfelder et al. (1954). An excellent review of the applications of quantum mechanics to geochemistry has recently been proposed by Tossell and Vaughan (1992). [Pg.20]

The document does not deal with the properties of anisotropic materials. This is an extensive subject in its own right and the reader is referred to specialized texts [14,15] for information. [Pg.146]

Rigorous proof, which involves more quantitative discussion of the mechanics of the normal vibrations and the use of explicit expressions for the kinetic and potential energies, may be found in more specialized texts, for example. E. B. Wilson, J. C. Decius. and P. C. Cross, Molecular Vibrations, McGraw-Hill, New York, 1955. [Pg.309]

Our aim in writing this book has been to produce a brief but comprehensive account which may be read - we hope with some profit and interest - by anyone with a basic knowledge of chemistry and physics who wishes to know something about how batteries work, and what the main developments are in this fascinating area of science and technology. We have tried to maintain a balance between describing well established conventional systems, and state-of-the-art developments which may or may not become of commercial importance. However, because of the existence of excellent specialized texts which describe in some detail the evolution of the main commercial batteries, we have placed considerable emphasis on discussing recent trends and discoveries. [Pg.365]

The work so far described has been dependent on the Sn-H bond in tributyltin hydride. Triphenyltin hydride can also be employed [lie,Ilf], The unusual efficiency of triphenyltin hydride for the desulfnrization of thiocarbonyl compounds has only recently been reported [12]. There are specialized texts on organotin compounds [13] in which the properties of the Sn-H bond are discussed at length. [Pg.154]

The host of interesting kinetic processes associated with the movement of dislocations through materials containing various obstacles to their motion is far too large to be described in this book. The reader is therefore referred to specialized texts [2, 7-9]. [Pg.264]

The foregoing has been a brief introductory discussion of NMR which has concentrated on some basic principles that are very useful in understanding the technique. The actual practice of NMR today is much more advanced. The incorporation of Fourier transform techniques has revolutionized NMR spectroscopy. All types of pulse sequences and two-dimensional (2D) techniques have been developed to provide even greater structural detail than has been discussed above. A discussion of such techniques belongs in a more specialized text, but it must be remembered that while these techniques are faster, more sensitive, and much more sophisticated, they are still largely based on the principles presented here, as is the interpretation of the results. [Pg.366]

For more than half a century, spectroscopy has been the key structural tool for organic chemistry and biochemistry. This remains the case today although the availability of enhanced methods of X-ray analysis has somewhat altered the balance in both disciplines. A vast array of specialized texts are available that survey spectroscopic techniques in general or individual methods in particular. It would be folly to try to duplicate those efforts here. A brief overview of the methods may prove helpful and serve as a reminder for the practitioner who consults this handbook. [Pg.653]

It would be possible to compile a list of additional readings for the range of subjects in this text which would be as long as the text itself. Instead, I choose to err on the side of brevity. The books listed below provide general information on most of these subjects. Links to other, more specialized texts are included on the Web page. [Pg.197]

The descriptions and definitions given here are only a brief summary and for further detail more specialized texts can be consulted. [Pg.79]

Equivalence testing (as described) would form a necessary part of any demonstration that two analytical methods were interchangeable, but it would not be sufficient alone. If you need to tackle this problem, consult a specialized text. [Pg.110]

Textbooks for further reading are marked by an asterisk ( ), and special texts published by the International Atomic Energy Agency are given at the end of this list. [Pg.438]

There is no doubt about the importance of n, the principal quantum number, but where does it come from This quantum number and two other quantum numbers come from solving the Schrodinger equation. We are not going to go into any details regarding Schrodinger s equation or how to solve it—there are plenty of more specialized texts available if you are interested in more detail. [Pg.86]

If you want more detailed information, you can refer to the tables in Chapter 15 or better still the more comprehensive tables in any specialized text. [Pg.250]

Few books on general organic chemistry deal with 1,2,4-trlazoles beyond naming the ring system. Even specialized texts of heterocyclic chemistry are not much more informative with the exception of (B-67MI41200) which introduces the student to such properties of triazoles that conform to the generalizable behaviour of kindred heterocycles. [Pg.735]

In this section we will describe some typical techniques for purification and drying of reagents. There are several other more specialized texts which should be consulted if you need to purify other reagents. T2,3... [Pg.71]

Again, for more detailed treatment of this subject the reader should refer to more specialized texts (38,60,67-69). [Pg.726]
