Special Systems

Gas bubbles in liquid metals and in fluidized beds have been the subject of special studies because of their practical importance and because of the experimental difficulties associated with studying bubble properties in opaque media. Much of the work has been carried out in so-called two-dimensional columns, where a sheet of liquid or fluidized particles, typically 1 cm thick, is confined between two parallel transparent walls. Bubbles span the gap between the front and rear faces and can be observed with backlighting. [Pg.216]

Fluidized beds are beds of solid particles supported by upward flow of a gas or liquid. Because of their temperature uniformity, excellent heat transfer characteristics, and solids handling possibilities, fluidized beds have found wide application for physical and chemical processes. [Pg.218]

Three-phase (solid/liquid/gas) fluidized systems are also of some practical importance. Several atomic absorption analytical problems are best handled by producing a gaseous sample external to the sampling cell. Elements frequently sampled in this manner include mercury, arsenic, selenium, and antimony. [Pg.278]

Mercury has an appreciable vapor pressure at room temperature. It is possible, therefore, to place mercury vapor in a sample cell in the optical path of an atomic absorption instrument and obtain a usable absorption signal. The mercury must be separated from the sample material prior to introduction into the sample cell. [Pg.278]

The method is very sensitive, with a detection limit of about 1.0 ppb in solution. The method can be adapted to a variety of samples and has been used for biological tissues, geological samples, and water analysis. This type of evaluation of a distillation system involves a material and heat balance around each tray. It is extremely tedious to do by conventional means, and is now handled with computers. Syringe pumps driven by screw mechanisms were popular in the 1960s because of their inherent precision and pulseless flow characteristics. Their disadvantages are higher manufacturing costs and the problems associated with syringe refill cycles.
