Equation (A.80) is generally valid for all one-component systems, independent of the state of order, which may be gaseous, liquid-like or crystalline. [Pg.477]

An equation that is fully equivalent to Eq. (A.80) can be applied in studies of pol3Tner solutions. The limiting value for q — 0 of the structure factor of a solution is given by [Pg.477]

Mixing two or more polymers to produce blends or alloys is a well-established route to achieve a certain level of physical properties, without the need to synthesize specialized polymer systems. For example, an amorphous and brittle polymer, such as polystyrene, can increase its toughness when blending with polyethylene and a compatibilizer. [Pg.513]

Standard-grade PSAs are usually made from styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), natural rubber, or blends thereof in solution. In addition to rubbers, polyacrylates, polymethylacrylates, polyfvinyl ethers), polychloroprene, and polyisobutenes are often components of the system ([198], pp. 25-39). These are often modified with phenolic resins, or resins based on rosin esters, coumarones, or hydrocarbons. Phenolic resins improve temperature resistance, solvent resistance, and cohesive strength of PSA ([196], pp. 276-278). Antioxidants and tackifiers are also essential components. Sometimes the tackifier will be a lower molecular weight component of the high polymer system. The phenolic resins may be standard resoles, alkyl phenolics, or terpene-phenolic systems ([198], pp. 25-39 and 80-81). Pressure-sensitive dispersions are normally comprised of special acrylic ester copolymers with resin modifiers. The high polymer base used determines adhesive and cohesive properties of the PSA. [Pg.933]

Polyurethane mortar flooring systems based on somewhat similar technology to this special polyester system have also been used in chemical plants and have given excellent service. The basic urethane polymer is more elastomeric than either epoxy or polyester resins and, as such, is reported to have excellent thermal properties up... [Pg.106]

Use well-designed, specialized polymer dissolution systems wherever possible (such as those from the U.S. Filter, Inc. subsidiary, Strandco ), especially for emulsion polymers, rather than simple dissolving tanks and mixers with propeller-type impellers. This prevents undissolved lumps of polymer (fish-eyes) and the breakdown of polymer chains. Always install a strainer to prevent possible pump clogging. [Pg.319]

This polymer can be prepared from p-phenylenediamine and terephthaloyl chloride. The polymer is highly crystalline and, thus, difficult to keep in solution. Sufficiently high molecular weight polymers can be obtained by solution polymerization using a special solvent system. This ridged rod polymer can form a liquid crystalline solutions.7,9 14... [Pg.186]

Special considerations are required in estimating paraimeters from experimental measurements when the relationship between output responses, input variables and paraimeters is given by a Monte Carlo simulation. These considerations, discussed in our first paper 1), relate to the stochastic nature of the solution and to the fact that the Monte Carlo solution is numerical rather than functional. The motivation for using Monte Carlo methods to model polymer systems stems from the fact that often the solution... [Pg.282]

However, the fact that industrial applications of polymer surface fluorination employ a fluorine/nitrogen mixture as the fluorinating agent complicates matters because fluorine gas is toxic, may explode when brought into contact with organic substances, and causes severe bums on human tissue. Moreover, the use of fluorine requires highly qualified personnel and special safety systems. [Pg.224]

Physical characterization of polymers is a common activity that research and development technologists at the Dow Chemical Company perform. A material property evaluation that is critical for most polymer systems is a tensile test. Many instruments such as an Instron test frame can perform a tensile test and, by using specialized software, can acquire and process data. Use of an extensometer eliminates calibration errors and allows the console to display strain and deformation in engineering units. Some common results from a tensile test are modulus, percent elongation, stress at break, and strain at yield. These data are then used to better understand the capabilities of the polymer system and in what end-use applications it may be used. [Pg.453]
