Spades

Many elements are familiar to us in everyday life. Iron is an element used for making ships, cars, spades, etc. There are about 90 such familiar elements, including helium, oxygen, nitrogen, mercury, platinum, and gold. As an element, iron consists of atoms of iron, the smallest building blocks, each of which is indivisible by chemical means. A lump of iron comprises millions, trillions, and zillions of atoms, and the mass of each atom of iron is very small, about 10 g In a piece of iron weighing 50 g, there are about lO atoms. 

Small complex tool steel parts are being made by conventional compaction and sintering in vacuum to near theoretical density. AppHcations include spade drills, knife blades, slotting cutters, insert blades for gear cutters, reamer blades, and cutting tool inserts.

The flare system should have been purged with nitrogen before the lines were spaded or the control valve removed. At the very least the open end should have been blanked as soon as the valve was removed. 

The incident also shows the importance of placing spades as near as possible to the equipment that is to be isolated, particularly when a vessel is to be entered. Valves should not be left between a slip-plate and the vessel, as liquid can then be trapped between the valve and the slip-plate and enter the vessel if the valve leaks or is opened.

MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE EVENTS events that cannot occur simultaneously. In cases where the depuration of HOCs from BMOs involves enzyme-mediated biotransformations (Eq. 7.4) or active transport mechanisms, and environmental concentrations are high (e.g. near a point source), depuration rates have been shown to follow Michaelis-Menten kinetics (Spade and Hamelink, 1985). Michaelis-Menten kinetics is elicited when an enzyme or active transport system is saturated with a chemical. This type of kinetics is characterized by lower values of keS at sites with high HOC concentrations. If k s are unchanged at high concentration sites, Michaelis-Menten kinetics will result in elevated BAFs. However, if chemical concentrations become toxic, finfish likely avoid the area and sessile organisms such as mussels may close their valves for extended periods (Huckins et al., 2004). 

When a spadeful of wet, anaerobic soil is brought to the surface and allowed to dry, air enters through drying cracks and the soil tends to become uniformly oxidized and turn a uniform brown. Whereas when oxidation occurs without drying—as, for example, near a root releasing O2 into wet soil—it is far less uniform and reddish-brown ferric oxide deposits form on and near the oxidizing source. The difference depends on the relative rates of movement of O2 into the soil and of ferrous iron and other reductants in the opposite direction, and the rates of reaction. 

Dig only when soil conditions are right, especially if your soil is heavy. It should not be so wet that it sticks to your spade, nor so dry that you have to break up huge clods. 

Chop up tough and bulky items with a spade or shredder. 

Another way to recycle kitchen and vegetable waste is to bury it in a trench or pit, and then grow either peas or beans, or "cucurbits"—zucchini, squash, pumpkins, or cucumbers—on top of it It provides nutrients and moisture exactly where they are required.
