Southern Maryland

ETG supplied thermal desorption technology at the Southern Maryland Wood Treating Superfund site. From 1997 through 2000, it was estimated that the thermal desorption costs at the site were 60,450,429 (including pending costs and potential modifications). The estimated completion cost for this application was 221 per ton. This was within 4% of the estimated cost in the record of decision (ROD) ( 214 per ton) (D22906L, p. 20). 

Because of the geologic and compositional complexity present in this part of Southern Maryland, many more samples (especially more transects of the St. Mary s Hill) would aid in better understanding the observed trace element distributions. Archaeological excavation in the St. Barbara s brickyard area will be important in determining if this might have been the site where the Chapel bricks were made.

The overall approach is an attempt to utilize some rather simple, easily-obtained chemical observations of natural aquifer systems to determine numerical values for dispersivity that are valid on a regional scale. The second scenario includes the possibility of adding a fourth distribution center in Southern Maryland (Figure 8.5). The analysis was completed (Table 8.4) using estimated cost data for a fourth distribution center (Table 8.5). 

Next, the hospital system needs to determine if they should proceed and add a new distribution center in Southern Maryland. They will save an estimated 631,800 per year, but is the total savings sufficient and will the cash inflows come early enough to undertake the project NPV, IRR, and payback period analyses are employed to answer these questions.
