Solvents acrylic

Much of the information about the harmful effects of organic solvents comes from studies of industrial exposure, although toluene abuse through sniffing of glues and other household sources of solvents (acrylic paints, adhesive cements, aerosol paints, lacquer thinners, shoe polish, typewriter correction fluids, varnishes, and fuels) has also been widely reported. 

The separation of products is usually acconq>lished by first absorbing reactor-2 effluent into water, followed by extraction of the organics into a solvent such as butyl acetate, and distillation to recover the solvent, acrylic acid and acetic acid, and aqueous and organic wastes. However, if relatively high propylene and low steam concentrations in the feed are used, extraction can be dispensed with. In file interest of minimization of processing, this design will be enqiloyed, but it does require recycle. 

In acetic acid as solvent, acrylic acid is produced (eq. (31)), accompanied by some acetoxypropionic acid [114].

Of particular interest are the ternary systems of ethylcellulose dissolved in a mixed solvent (acrylic acid - water or acrylic acid - glacial acetic acid) and ethylcellulose/ acrylic acid solution blended with a flexible polymer, polyacrylamide. The conclusions of these studies is that, for cellulosic liquid crystals application, the morphology and optical properties of lyotropic liquid crystals can be adjusted by solvent mixing and blending with other polymers.

Solvent acrylic sealants are one component mixtures. A typical formula is 40 to 60% polymer 1 to 4% tremolitic talc, for improved cohesive strength and antisag 15 to 40% calcium carbonate, talc or clay 0.05 to 3% tinting color 2 to 7% plasticizer, to improve low temperature flexibility and 2 to 5% solvent, such as xylene or toluene. These sealants are grmnable at temperatures above 60°F(16°C), but must be preheated if used at lower temperatm-es. They cm-e through solvent evaporation and develop a Shore hardness of 5 to 10 in two weeks and gradually increase to a final range of 45 to 60. If the temperatm-e drops to 0°F(-18°C), the durometer will increase by 15 to 20 points. 

Sealants are used to fill joints, gaps, and cavities between two or more similar or dissimilar substrates in contrast to adhesives which are used to bond two materials together, and usually with a much thinner bondline. Polymers typically used in sealant applications include silicones, urethanes, polysulfides, solvent acrylic, and butyls. Polysulfides, polyurethanes, and silicones are used more in bonding apphcations.
