Distortions of patterns due to capillary forces can be avoided altogether by applying supercritical drying (SCD) [83,84]. In a supercritical liquid, the surface tension becomes neghgible (y 0) and the capillary force vanishes. However, depending on the solvent, high pressure (1-10 MPa) and elevated temperatures (40-400 °C), may be required [85]. This factor renders this method not imiversally applicable for wet processing. For example, if SCD was to be used for isopropanol removal from SU-8, temperatures over 235.2 °C and pressures over 4.8 MPa would be needed [85]. [Pg.197]

In these polymer-metal complexes of the Werner type, however, organometallic compounds are formed as reaction intermediates and/or activated complexes. As a result, the properties of polymer-metal catalysts in reductive reactions are different from those of polymer-metal catalysts in oxidative reactions. In the former, the catalytic reactions are very sensitive to moisture and air, and the complex catalysts often decompose in the presence of water and oxygen. Thus, reductive catalytic reactions are carried out under artificial conditions such as organic solvent, high pressure, and high temperature. Commercially, urea is produced by the direct dehydration of ammonium carbamate, NH2COONH4, at elevated temperature and pressure. Another widely used overlay adhesive is the contact type. These specialized adhesives, in the same group as mbber cement, may be of the solvent-base or water-base types. Reppe s work also resulted in the high pressure route which was estabUshed by BASF at Ludwigshafen in 1956. In this process, acetylene, carbon monoxide, water, and a nickel catalyst react at about 200°C and 13.9 MPa (2016 psi) to give acryUc acid. Safety problems caused by handling of acetylene are alleviated by the use of tetrahydrofuran as an inert solvent. In this process, the catalyst is a mixture of nickel bromide with a cupric bromide promotor. The hquid reactor effluent is degassed and extracted. The acryUc acid is obtained by distillation of the extract and subsequendy esterified to the desked acryhc ester. Pollution Prevention. Procedures haven been developed for recovery of composite ammonium perchlorate propellant from rocket motors, and the treatment of scrap and recovered propellant to reclaim ingredients. These include the use of high pressure water jets or compounds such as ammonia, which form fluids under pressure at elevated temperature, to remove the propellant from the motor, extraction of the ammonium perchlorate with solvents such as water or ammonia as a critical fluid, recrystalli2ation of the perchlorate and reuse in composite propellant or in slurry explosives or conversion to perchloric acid (166,167). [Pg.50]

Pulp-like olefin fibers are produced by a high pressure spurting process developed by Hercules Inc. and Solvay, Inc. Polypropylene or polyethylene is dissolved in volatile solvents at high temperature and pressure. After the solution is released, the solvent is volatilised, and the polymer expands into a highly fluffed, pulp-like product. Additives are included to modify the surface characteristics of the pulp. Many polymers, including polyethylene, polypropylene, and nylons, do not dissolve in suitable casting solvents. In the laboratory, membranes can be made from such polymers by melt pressing, in which the polymer is sandwiched at high pressure between two heated plates. A pressure of 13.8—34.5 MPa (2000—5000 psi) is appHed for 0.5 to 5 minutes, at a plate temperature just above the melting point of the polymer.
