Tocopherol stripping or retention during deodorization is approached differently in Europe and the United States. In the United States, most soft oils are chemically refined and tocopherol stripping during deodorization is maximized. A level of 500 ppm for soybean oil, for example, is considered sufficient to protect the oil from oxidation. The excess tocopherols are collected in the deodorizer distillate (FAD), which is valorized as a high-value-added byproduct. More than half of all the benzoic acid produced in the United States is used in the manufacture of various polymeric products, primarily the family of plastics known as the polyvinyl acetates (PVAs). The PVAs, in turn, are used as adhesives, caulks, sealants, and coatings for paper, film, and plastic foil. About a quarter of all benzoic acid is converted to its sodium and potassium salts, sodium benzoate (C6HsC00Na) and potassium benzoate (C6H5C00K), for use as food preservatives. Sodium benzoate and potassium benzoate are now the most widely used food preservatives in the world. They are added to a host of products, such as soft drinks and fruit juices, jams and jellies, baked goods, and salad dressings. In addition to its uses as a herhal remedy, the primary use of cinnamaldehyde is as a food additive to enhance the flavor and/or odor of food products. It is used most commonly in cake mixes, chewing gums, chocolate products, synthetic cinnamon oils, cola drinks, ice creams, soft drinks, and vermouth. The compound is also added to a number of cosmetics and home care products to improve their odor. Some body-responsive deodorant hydrogel products are already available in the market though we do not know exactly what materials have been used because of commercial confidentiality. As far as we know, no deodorant fabric with body-responsive technology has been commercialized yet. For responsive deodorant fabrics, more issues such as soft handle and high stability of the products have to be taken into consideration. Another issue is how to best control the degree of hydration of the product in the open environment, which is affected by many factors. [Pg.463]

Commonly, perfume development is performed by perfume houses who focus their development on product appeal needs. For example, perfumes used for deodorant products tend to be impactful and residual to skin to provide long-lived perfume on skin. A number of products are appearing on the market that are designed for individuals with sensitive skin. The perfume levels used in these sensitive-skin products are usually lower than for other soaps and are selected to mask the base odor of the soap while providing some soft perfume notes during use, reinforcing their mildness to or compatibility with skin.
