Society for the History of Technology

This contribution is derived from Strategy and System Reppe and the Development of Organic Chemicals in I.G. Farben, a paper presented at a meeting of the Society for the History of Technology, Madison, Wisconsin, 3 November 1991. Subsequently it has been reworked and presented at various seminars. It is based largely on my doctoral thesis, The Development of Acetylene Chemistry and Synthetic Rubber by I.G. Farbenindustrie Aktiengesellschaft, 1926-1945, Oxford University D.Phil., 1982.

Current Bibliography in the History of Technology. 1964-2002. Baltimore, MD The Johns Hopkins University Press. This publication is a supplement of the journal Technology and Culture of the Society for the History of Technology. The paper edition ended in 2002. Since then, it is published only in electronic format as part of the History of Science, Technology and Medicine database. It is divided into 17 subject classifications for each of the 5 defined historical time periods. It provides extensive coverage in all formats of the literature on the history of technology. 

In 1920, the first learned society devoted to the history of engineering and technology, the Newcomen Society, was founded in London. In the United States, the Society for the History of Technology was created in 1956. Both of these societies have had a very positive impact on the development of the field of the history of engineering. Many other societies that traditionally have been studying...

McNeil, I., ed. 1996. An Encyclopaedia of the History of Technology. London Routledge. Edited by a former executive secretary of the Newcomen Society for the History of Engineering, this one-volume encyclopedia is a compilation of articles written by selected members of the history of engineering community. Divided into 22 chapters, this work covers the history of technology from its earliest time to the present. It is an excellent introduction to a very complex and fascinating area. At the end of each chapter is listed other publications for further reading. 

British Society for the History of Science http //www.bshs.org.uk/ (accessed October 20, 2010). BSHS is the largest U.K. body dealing with all aspects of the history of science, technology, and medicine. The society publishes the British Journal for the History of Science (BJHS) (from Web page). 

Anthony S. Travis is deputy director of the Sidney M. Edelstein Center for the History and Philosophy of Science, Technology and Medicine at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he is also senior researcher in the history of technology. He has published widely on the history of chemical technology and the Channel tunnel project, and is series editor of the American Chemical Society-Chemical Heritage Foundation History of the Modem Chemical Sciences Series. ...

IEEE History Center http //www.ieee.org/organizations/history center/ (accessed October 20, 2010). IEEE is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. The IEEE established the IEEE History Center in 1980 and, in 1990, the center moved to the campus of Rutgers University, which became a cosponsor. The center maintains many useful resources for the engineer, for the historian of technology, and for anyone interested in the development of electrical and computer engineering and their role in modem society (from Web page). 

However, the technology of composite materials cannot be fully considered as a new chapter in the history of chemistry. Originally the term composite was used in conjunction with reinforced plastics. The US Society for Plastic Industries had a Reinforced Plastics Division which was renamed Reinforced Plastics and Composites Division, in 1967. [17] In France, a bi-monthly magazine entitled Plastique renforce/Verre textile published by the professional organization bearing the same name, started in 1963 and was rechristened in 1983 Composites with Plastique renforce/verre textile as a subtitle.
