Technology and Society

In the chapters of this part, I show you some applications of chemistry. I cover the chemistry of carbon and show you how it applies to petroleum and the process of making gasoline. I show you how that very same petroleum can be used to make plastics and S5mthetic fibers. I zip you home to look at the chemistry behind cleaners and detergents, medicines, and cosmetics of all kinds. And I show you some problems that society, technology, and science have created — air and water pollution.

This report has dealt with a wide area of issues and concerns. The main issue has been to describe the engineer of today and tomorrow in the transition of industrial society towards information society. Technology and economy within their global framework are defining the most important scenarios of the future of engineering professions. The university is expected to respond to these scenarios. The response, however, needs to be based on considering university policy as a consistent system. Thus the challenge for university policy is to search for its own path into the future...

It is easy enough to describe and even quantify domestic energy use as it has changed over the centuries and particularly since 1900, but it is much more difficult to assess how these changes have affected society, culture, and individuals for better or for worse. Ruth Schwartz Cowan argued in More Work for Mother (1983) that this new domestic technology resulted in the disappearance of domestic ser-... 

Fundamental research in pyrotechnics is published in the US in Combustion and Flame by the Combustion Institute, and in the UK in Combustion Science and Technology and in Fuel . Germany has the new, journal, Propellants and Explosives (German Chemical Society), which is the successor to the discontinued Explosivstoffe . A necessary caveat is that these journals are strongly oriented toward combustion or propulsion so that only rarely do they yield pyrotechnic information. Likewise, the various publications of the learned societies contain much data on thermodynamics, spectroscopy, and instrumental analysis which are useful in the study of pyrotechnics. In the USSR the situation is somewhat better as Physics of Combustion and Explosion (Fizika Gorenia i Vzryva) of the Siberian Branch Academy of Sciences USSR is exclusively oriented toward subjects of interest, as several scientific institutes are primarily devoted to research in pyrotechnics. The same authors do publish also, however, in the journals of the Academy of Science USSR (of which there are several) as well as in the corresponding journals of the academies of the various republics, so that the impression is created of a high level of activity... 

The latter part of the 20th century has seen remarkable advances in science and technology. Accomplishments in biochemistry and medicine, computer technology, and telecommunications have benefited nearly everyone on Earth to one degree or another. Along with these advances that have improved our quality of life, scientific research into the study of the Earth has revealed a planetary system that is more complex and dynamic than anyone would have imagined even 50 years ago. The Earth and the environment have become one of society s greatest concerns, perhaps as the result of these discoveries combined with the quick dissemination of information that is now possible with modem telecommunications. 

The committee encourages decision makers in the chemical processing industries to increase their commitment to research in their companies both to retain their world leadership in chemical technology and to deliver to American society...
