These analyses revealed a perpendicular arc of debris expected for habitual hearth-side workspaces (45). The hearth-associated scatter found on the floor of this Late Archaic pithouse provides clear evidence that ochre was thermally processed to change its color. Further it shows that thermal processing of ochre occurred in a domestic context though it was primarily used in symbolic and ritual contexts. At Jiskairumoko, preparation of ochre for symbolic and ritual purposes appears to have been embedded in the domestic setting. The occupation bears early evidence for prestige goods in burial contexts. Yet, ochre preparation does not appear to have occurred in specialized architecture. Social differentiation was taking place, but preparation of ritual materials took place in domestic contexts. [Pg.485]

Technological excessiveness, over-refinement of design, makes an early appearance in the social differentiations between tent forms. Some structures were made needlessly complicated and protracted in assembly specifically to indicate an overabundance of human resources. [Pg.41]

Cities, especially, build monuments to their own capacity to command resources and generate civic identification (Fig. 2.4). The term civil boosterism was created for exactly this sentiment. Public landscapes speak of economic power of their builders, and the landscape is often the clearest way for cities to brag about their wealth. Aesthetic style is a manifestation of economic power - elegance speaks glowingly of the power to purchase it. A hundred years ago Veblen recognized conspicuous consumption as a tool of social differentiation, explaining the... [Pg.27]

But in every transformation of such proportions, there are winners and losers, and fisheries has seen its share of social differentiation. The biggest loser is of course the environment many fisheries are currently believed to be severely overexploited (Fig. 16.3). [Pg.260]

The use of dyes seems to have began over 10 millennia ago, when dyes of vegetable origin were apparently applied to the skin simply for amusement, for ritual purposes, or to identify or differentiate status or social group. All the dyes used in the past and up to the nineteenth century, when artificial dyes were first synthesized, were of natural origin most were extracted from plants, some from animals (Verhecken 2005). Common dyes well known since antiquity are listed in Table 92 (Kirby 1988 Celoria 1971). [Pg.390]

An initial reading of the evolution of pharmaceutical consumption within the Spanish Social Security system enables us to conclude, albeit in isolation and tentatively, that in per capita terms drug consumption has grown more than the nominal GDP, but that it has maintained its position within public health expenditure as a whole. Therefore, in terms of evolution, rising consumption does not represent a differential feature within the general growth in health spending. [Pg.197]

The terms race, ethnicity, and minority are also used in this chapter. Race refers to a group that is socially defined on the basis of physical characteristics. Ethnicity refers to a shared culture and lifestyle, especially as reflected in language, folkways, religious and other institutional forms, material culture such as clothing and food, and cultural products such as music, literature, and art. Finally, the term minority group refers to a part of a population differing from others in some characteristics, which often subject them to differential treatment (Byrd and Clayton, 2002 Van de Berghe, 1967). [Pg.266]
