Differential treatment

Most of the analytical treatments of center-fed columns describe the purification mechanism in an adiabatic oscillating spiral column (Fig. 22-9). However, the analyses by Moyers (op. cit.) and Griffin (op. cit.) are for a nonadiabatic dense-bed column. Differential treatment of the horizontal-purifier (Fig. 22-8) performance has not been reported however, overall material and enthalpy balances have been described by Brodie (op. cit.) and apply equally well to other designs. [Pg.1994]

The terms race, ethnicity, and minority are also used in this chapter. Race refers to a group that is socially defined on the basis of physical characteristics. Ethnicity refers to a shared culture and lifestyle, especially as reflected in language, folkways, religious and other institutional forms, material culture such as clothing and food, and cultural products such as music, literature, and art. Finally, the term minority group refers to a part of a population differing from others in some characteristics, which often subject them to differential treatment (Byrd and Clayton, 2002 Van de Berghe, 1967). [Pg.266]

Ascertainment of treatment-emergent side effects requires a baseline symptom assessment before treatment is begun and at regular intervals thereafter. An ideal way to monitor side effects is to use medication-specific side effect scales that are designed for a particular drug class. These combine physical and behavioral symptoms with information obtained from the medical evaluation of the patient. Rating scales may help differentiate treatment-emergent side effects from an exacerbation of a symptom present at baseline, or from other causes of physical or behavioral symptoms. They may also help the family and the child accurately identify and label these side effects and then discuss them with the physician. [Pg.402]

Comorbid anxiety has been associated with differential treatment response. This association predicts at times a better response to CBT and TCAs (Hughes et ah, 1990 Brent et ah, 1998). Treatment of comorbid anxiety, which most often precedes depression, is essential because the treatment contributes to improvement and may prevent future depressive episodes (Ko-vacs et ah, 1989 Hayward et ah, 2000). Fortunately, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy treatments found useful for the treatment of MDD have also been found to be beneficial for treatment of youths with anxiety disorders (Kendall, 1994 RUPP Anxiety Group, 2001). [Pg.476]

In 1997, a large epidemiological study found that 11.3% of individuals with lifetime major depression had only episodes meeting atypical criteria ( 11). These patients (especially male patients) may also be at greater risk for sedative-hypnotic abuse. If the clinician is cognizant of these probabilities, preventive steps can be taken (e g., education about sedative-hypnotics). The identification of the nonclassic forms, as well as their differences in clinical presentation, has substantial implications for their differential treatment (see Chapter 7). [Pg.103]

In the sections Associated disorders in western medicine, some disease names are mentioned. However, it should be borne in mind that a disease in western medicine may involve more than one syndrome in traditional Chinese medicine. As such, the diseases mentioned here are only intended to help the reader to understand the syndrome and to have some corresponding orientation in western medicine. The principles, methods and strategies introduced in each chapter of this book are abstracted from a large number of formulas, integrating the knowledge of single herbs, herbal combinations, syndrome differentiation, treatment methods and treatment sequence. They are the essential part of this book. [Pg.1]

First consider the removal of pure water from an initial or feed solution of concentration x1 expressed as mole fraction of salt. Because the removal of water will change the concentration of the solution and since, to fulfill the condition of reversibility, the water vapor removed must at all times be in equilibrium with salt solution, a differential treatment is indicated. Write Equation 1 in the form... [Pg.11]

Johnson Matthey titration" is a simple pH titration of the support by hydrochloric acid (for the basic functions) and by soda (for the acidic functions). This procedure is well described in [11]. It does not give direct quantitative information on the number of each type of acidic function. According to [12], a mathematical differential treatment of the experimental data may give the pKa of acidic functions present on the carbon surface. Nevertheless, the complexity and the wide variety of acidic functions present on the active carbon make it impossible to present very accurate quantitative information. From the... [Pg.994]

How race will be used in clinical practice raises some interesting problems in their own right. For instance, if a racial difference is identified, its use in clinical practice requires a physician to be aware of the racial difference, make an external assessment of the patient s race, and then identify whether the patient falls into an at-risk category. Further, a patient may not agree with the physician s racial assessment and hence may refuse the differential treatment guidelines. These problems are fortunately outside the modelers realm. [Pg.283]

The canlianons contact betwenn phases provided by pecked columns requires a differential treatment for a horizontal "slice of the column, followed by integration over the column height. [Pg.427]
