The appropriate technology branch of the environmental movement had been sparked by E.F Schumacher, who published the book Small is Beautiful in 1973. From 1950 to 1970 Schumacher held an important government position as chief economic advisor to the British Coal Board. In 1955 Schumacher spent time in Burma, where he developed the principles of what he called Buddhist economics the belief that good work was essential for proper human development and that production from local resources for local needs is the most rational way of economic life . He subsequently became a pioneer of what is now called appropriate technology earth- and user-friendly technologies matched to the scale of community life. 

The fact, that hollow stirrers are not suitable on an industrial scale for sucking up large gas throughputs, could be described small is beautiful . Here, the gas throughput and the stirrer power must be decoupled from one another, by feeding a fast rotating stirrer from underneath by externally compressed gas.

The book Small Is Beautiful by E. F. Schumacher (Perennial Library, 1975) is valuable reading, providing a clear perspective of how a developing country perceives the United States. The only image many workers have of the United States comes from television shows such as Dallas, Knots Landing, and Clint Eastwood s Dirty Harry movies. A better understanding of their view of the United States can only help in the development of good relationships. 

From the above facts, it may therefore be concluded that notches and other irregularities in the cross-section areas as well as small and smallest dents in the surface (roughnesses) should be avoided. This is why polished surfaces and cross sections as smooth as possible are a basic requirement for construction as well. The easiest way to realize this requirement is to keep the space that is under pressure as small as possible ( small is beautiful ) and to lead the pressure-generated forces to the energy consumption point not circuitously but as directly as possible. Furthermore, shrinked designs as well as the use of autofrettage decisively increase fatigue life (see Chapter 12).
