Collection Techniques. The simplest mechanical method for normal liquid droplets is the slide collection slide sampling) or impression method. This method was extensively used three decades ago, and has been rarely employed since then. In this method, when the slide is exposed to a spray, droplets impinging on it make impressions. The impressions are then observed and measured usually using a Quantimet image analyzer, although a microscope fitted with a traversing scale may be used for the measurement. The measured data are subsequently converted to actual droplet sizes based on a correction factor proposed by May.[659]... [Pg.401]

The dustiness index of coal is a means of determining the relative values that represent the amount of dust produced when coal is handled in a standard manner. Thus, a 50-lb sample of coal is placed on a slide plate in a metal cabinet of prescribed size. When the plate is withdrawn, the sample falls into a drawer, and after 5 seconds, two slides are inserted into the box. The slides collect suspended dust particles for 2 minutes (coarse dust) or for 10 minutes (fine dust). The dustiness index is reported as 40 times the gram weight of dust that has settled after either 2 minutes or after an additional 8 minutes. [Pg.164]

Tilted-Plate Clarifiers Lamella or tilted-plate separators have achieved increased use for clarification. They contain a multiplicity of plates inchned at 45 to 60° from the horizontal. Various feed methods are employed so that the influent passes into each inchned channel at about one-third of the vertical height from the bottom. This results in the solids having to settle only a short distance in each channel before sliding down the base to the collection zone beneath the plates. The clarified liquid passes in the opposite direction beneath the ceiling of each channel to the overflow connection. [Pg.1684]

Static sampling systems are defined as those that do not have an active air-moving component, such as the pump, to pull a sample to the collection medium. This type of sampling system has been used for over 100 years. Examples include the lead peroxide candle used to detect the presence of SO2 in the atmosphere and the dust-fall bucket and trays or slides coated with a viscous material used to detect particulate matter. This type of system suffers from inability to quantify the amount of pollutant present over a short period of time, i.e., less than 1 week. The potentially desirable characteristics of a static sampling system have led to further developments in this type of technology to provide quantitative information on pollutant concentrations over a fked period of time. Static sampling systems have been developed for use in the occupational environment and are also used to measure the exposure levels in the general community, e.g., radon gas in residences. [Pg.189]

Electrodes in the center of the flow lane are maintained at high voltage and generate the electrical field that forces the particles to the collector walls. Recently, dry wire-pipe ESPs are being cleaned acoustically with sonic horns (Flynn, 1999). PSD is an important indicator of the fluidization characteristics of the catalyst, cyclone performance, and the attrition resistance of the catalyst. A drop in fines content indicates the loss of cyclone efficiency. This can be confirmed by the particle size of fines collected downstream of the cyclones. An increase in fines content of the E-cat indicates increased catalyst attrition. This can be due to changes in fresh catalyst binder quality, steam leaks, and/or internal mechanical problems, such as those involving the air distributor or slide vah es. [Pg.107]

In order to validate sliding spark spectrometry results, plastic material was collected and the element concentration was determined via AAS after digestion. The samples were used as calibration standards. Additional standards were obtained by manufacturing known amounts of additives in the polymer matrix. Calibrations were made for Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn, Sb, Si and Ti in chlorine-free polymers Al, Ba, Ca, Cd, Pb, Sn, Ti, Zn in PVC chlorine (as PVC) and bromine in polyurethane (PUR). An example of the effects of waste settlement can be illustrated by a recent incident at a hazardous waste landfill facility in California.5 At this facility, waste settlement led to sliding of the waste, causing the standpipes (used to monitor secondary leachate collection sumps) to move 60-90 ft downslope in 1 day. Because there was a very low coefficient of friction between the primary liner and the geonet, the waste (which was deposited in a canyon) slid down the canyon. There was also a failure zone between the secondary liner and the clay. A two-dimensional slope stability analysis at the site indicated a factor of safety (FS) greater than 1. A three-dimensional slope stability analysis, however, showed that the safety factor had dropped below one. Three-dimensional slope stability analyses should therefore be considered with canyon and trench landfills. [Pg.1122]
