Skin rash remedies

Generally in West Africa, the fruit is widely used in traditional remedies for the treatment of disease conditions including convulsion, gastric ulcer, rheumatism, fevers, whitlow, skin rashes, smallpox, malaria and dysentery (2, 39, 40, 104). It is also used to manage diabetes and cardiovascular diseases like hypertension and stroke in some parts of Ghana (Amoako-Atta, CBUD Director, KNUST, personal communication). The fruits are used to flavor foods and alcoholic beverages 2, 40). [Pg.254]

Some magnesium compounds are important over-the-counter medicines. For example, milk of magnesia is a suspension of magnesium hydroxide (Mg[OH]2) in water. This creamy liquid suspension is used as an antacid to neutralize excess acid in the stomach. Another magnesium compound remedy is Epsom salts, which are used to treat certain skin rashes. Discovered in Epsom, England, in 1618, these are crystals of magnesium sulfate evaporated from water. [Pg.25]

Histamine, acting at the Hi receptor, is mainly known for producing allergic responses, for example hay fever and skin reactions, such as urticaria ( nettle rash ). Antagonists of this receptor, which suppress these actions of histamine, are well known to the layman, under the loose description anti-histamines , as hay fever remedies. [Pg.650]

Two cases of Henoch-Schonlein purpura (a disease that involves purple spots on the skin, joint pain, gastrointestinal problems, and glomerulonephritis) have been reported in individuals that were using aloe. One patient had taken "some juice extracted from four to five leaflets of Aloe vera" (he had taken the same remedy several months prior with no reaction) 24 hours prior to developing a rash, abdominal pain followed by rapid deterioration of renal function and abnormal levels of serum creatinine (Cholongitas et al. 2005). The second patient had taken "extracts of Aloe vera" (parts consumed and dose consumed unspecified) for approximately 1 week. He developed general edema and palpable purpura that eventually resolved (Cao et al. 2005). [Pg.48]

Some of the first skin treatments were undoubtedly borrowed from the plant world, making use of leaves, flowers, and roots. The juice of the aloe vera, for example, is an ancient and effective remedy that continues to be used for some skin conditions. For centuries, physicians treated a wide range of afflictions, from rashes to wounds, using oils, powders, and salves they mixed themselves. Sunlight was used by European physicians in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to treat psoriasis and eczema. [Pg.477]
