Dennis Searle and E. M. Skillings discover the borax deposits of California. 

Stefan Niementowski (1866-1925), professor of general and analytical chemistry at the Lemberg Polytechnic Institute, twice elected president of the Polytechnic Institute, member of the Polish Academy of Skills, discovered methods of synthesis of y-hydroxyquinolines and 4-oxoquinazo-lines, later called Niementowski reactions. 

This volume of Organic Syntheses contains twenty-seven checked procedures of value to the modern practicing chemist. One hopes it will also serve to attract students to the charms of skillfully planned and executed experimental work. The majority of the preparations represent specific examples of important, often recently discovered synthetic methods with general applicability. As in previous volumes the preparation of a number of reagents and widely used starting materials is also included. 

As stated previously, these activities are only part of the job of the process chemist As described in Section 2 of each chapter, titled Chemistry Development , the author(s) will focus on the advancement of synthetic organic chemistry discovered during the process development. In order to satisfy the Process Chemist s scientific curiosity and to advance synthetic organic chemistry, further optimization followed by investigation of the scope and limitations of these reactions is explored. In order to ensure the robustness of the reaction and to optimize it in a more scientific way, elucidation of the reaction mechanism is undertaken. Mechanistic studies are very beneficial in improving our synthetic organic chemistry skills and provide opportunities to raise these reactions to a further dimension, again that of Art .

Etanercept (Enbrel ) is an engineered protein that combines the tail of an antibody with a part of the receptor for tumor necrosis factor (TNF). TNF is one of the cell-damaging proteins involved in inflammation. It got its name because the first thing scientists discovered that it did was kill cancer cells. Killing cancer cells is only one of its skills, however, and that may be something that happens... 

In 1736 the brothers Henric and Olof Kalmeter discovered at Los, Farila parish, Halsingland, a cobalt ore which they at first exported in tiris form. In 1744, however, a smalt works employing skilled workers from Germany was built flrere (39).

Borax in California. The great deposits of borax and other soluble salts in San Bernardino County, California, were discovered by Dennis Searle and E. M. Skillings on February 14, 1873. In the following year Arthur Robottom of London explored the borax regions of Nevada and California, travelled with a mule team over a very rough country at the rate of from 12 to 14 miles per day, and arrived at length. .. at the... 

In 1904 B. B. Boltwood, H. N. McCoy, and R. J. Strutt proved independently that radium is produced by spontaneous transmutation of uranium (107). Three years later Boltwood discovered an element which he named ionium and which he found to be the parent substance of radium (39). Professor Boltwood had acquired a broad cosmopolitan education in Munich, Leipzig, Manchester, and New Haven, and was a skilled laboratory technician, a sympathetic teacher, and a polished gentleman with a certain courtliness of manner. He proved that there is a genetic relationship between uranium, ionium, and radium (13). Ionium was discovered independently at about the same time by Otto Hahn and by Willy Marckwald (14, 73, 77).

Knowing how to properly create and submit an electronic resume demonstrates at least some level of computer skill. If you have a personal website you want potential employers to visit In hopes they will learn more about you, be sure the site doesn t contain personal Information you don t want the employer to discover or that the employer will have no Interest In. Posting your resume and support materials on a personal website can be worthwhile, especially If you re hoping to land a job In a computer-related or high-tech field. Make sure your personal site contains only Information of Interest to a potential employer, not pictures from your last vacation or photos of your cat, for example. 

In this type of situation, it s appropriate to be obvious about your job-search efforts and tap your networking skills to discover new employment opportunities. This may include contacting clients or customers, suppliers, or distributors with which your employer works, or anyone else outside your company you ve had business dealings with as an employee. If given permission by the employer, it s also acceptable to take advantage of your employer s in-house resources, such as Internet access. 

Chemists have a compelling curiosity to discover what compounds Nature provides, but to obtain this information it is necessary to isolate compounds from their natural source and to determine their structures. This is seldom an easy task, especially when the compound of interest is present at low concentrations such that enormous quantities of source material are required to extract even a few micrograms of the desired product. In this circumstance a high degree of skill and technology is required in both the isolation procedures and the subsequent investigations to establish the chemical structure.
