Cyclic Acetals. One of the most significant developments in the chemistry of sucrose was the synthesis of cycHc acetals which, despite many attempts, were not synthesized until 1974. The first synthesis of 4,6-0-benzyhdenesucrose was achieved from the reaction of sucrose with a, a-dibromotoluene in pyridine (29). Since then, many new acetalating reagents have been used to give a variety of sucrose acetals, generally by transacetalation reactions. [Pg.33]

Perhaps one of the most exciting developments in the chemistry of quinoxalines and phenazines in recent years originates from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, where Haddadin and Issidorides first made the observation that benzofuroxans undergo reaction with a variety of alkenic substrates to produce quinoxaline di-AT-oxides in a one-pot reaction which has subsequently become known as the Beirut reaction . Many new reactions tend to fall by the wayside by virtue of the fact that they are experimentally complex or require starting materials which are inaccessible however, in this instance the experimental conditions are straightforward and the starting benzofuroxans are conveniently prepared by hypochlorite oxidation of the corresponding o-nitroanilines or by pyrolysis of o-nitrophenyl azides. [Pg.181]

Perhaps the most exciting recent development in the chemistry of hydrogen is the discovery that, in transition metal polyhydrides, the molecule Hj can act as a dihapto ligand, (see below). [Pg.44]

One of the most dramatic developments in the chemistry of N2 during the past 30 years was the discovery by A. D. Allen and C. V. Senoff in 1965 that dinitrogen complexes such as [Ru(NH3)5(N2)1 could readily be prepared from aqueous RUCI3 using hydrazine hydrate in aqueous solution. Since that time virtually all transition metals have been found to give dinitrogen complexes and several hundred such compounds are now characterized.Three general preparative methods are available ... [Pg.414]

This review is an attempt to collect under one heading and to present in a systematic manner the large body of work which deals with the chemistry of the carboline ring systems. Some three hundred papers in this field have been published during the last decade, more than twice as many as appeared during the preceding fifty years. The renewed interest in the chemistry of the carbolines is due in no small measure to the discovery of serotonin and to the recent developments in the chemistry and pharmacology of the Rauwolfia and related alkaloids. [Pg.79]

In recent years, several interesting developments in the chemistry of pseudooxazolones have been reported. The chemical properties of this system depend to some extent on the type of substitution at the 2-position of the hetero ring. The discussion, therefore, is divided into two parts. [Pg.98]

In this review, our recent developments in the chemistry of 1-hydroxyindoles, 1-hydroxytryptophans, and 1-hydroxytryptamines, attained between the beginning of 1999 and the end of May 2001, are summarized together with results obtained... [Pg.103]

The third chapter is by J. Kuthan, P. Sebek, and S. Bohm of the Institute of Chemical Technology (Prague, The Czech Republic). It discusses developments in the chemistry of thiopyrans, selenopyrans, and teluropy-rans since 1983 and thus updates Kuthan s own chapter in Volume 34 of Advances, published in 1983. [Pg.380]

This section reviews recent developments in the chemistry of 4-acetoxy-1,3-diox-anes. Highly selective Lewis acid catalyzed nucleophilic additions are described, including their potential utility in natural product synthesis. [Pg.72]
