Sizing and capacity

Pulpstones. Improvements have been made in the composition and speed of the grinding wheel, in methods of feeding the wood and pressing it against the stone, in control of power to the stones, and in the size and capacity of the units. The first pulpstones were manufactured from quarried sandstone, but have been replaced by carbide and alumina embedded in a softer ceramic matrix, in which the harder grit particles project from the surface of the wheel (see Abrasives). The abrasive segments ate made up of three basic manufactured abrasive siUcon carbide, aluminum oxide, or a modified aluminum oxide. Synthetic stones have the mechanical strength to operate at peripheral surface speeds of about 1200—1400 m /min (3900 to 4600 ft/min) under conditions that consume 0.37—3.7 MJ/s (500—5000 hp) pet stone. [Pg.258]

Tensile Testing. The most widely used instmment for measuring the viscoelastic properties of soHds is the tensile tester or stress—strain instmment, which extends a sample at constant rate and records the stress. Creep and stress—relaxation can also be measured. Numerous commercial instmments of various sizes and capacities are available. They vary greatiy in terms of automation, from manually operated to completely computer controlled. Some have temperature chambers, which allow measurements over a range of temperatures. Manufacturers include Instron, MTS, Tinius Olsen, Apphed Test Systems, Thwing-Albert, Shimadzu, GRC Instmments, SATEC Systems, Inc., and Monsanto. [Pg.195]

Manufacturers of various types of mills maintain laboratories in which grindability tests are made to determine the suitability of their machines. When grindability comparisons are made on sm equipment of the manufacturers own class, there is a basis for scale-up to commercial equipment. This is better than relying on a grindabihty index obtained in a ball mih to estimate the size and capacity of different types such as hammer or jet mihs. [Pg.1829]

An inmortant caveat The lines are shown as continuous functions, a considerable oversimplification. Pumps, pipes, valves, and even membrane assemblies come in discrete sizes and capacities, sometimes giving a project cost with a sharper minimum and one displaced from the ideal minimum. Every process has different characteristics, but the general shape of a broad economic minimum is characteristic. [Pg.2028]

Until about the second World War chemical processes were developed in an evolutionary way by building plants of increasing size and capacity. The capacity of the next plant in the series was determined by a scale-up factor that depended mainly upon experience gained from scale-ups of similar plants. Due to a lack of predictive models for chemical processes and operations, processes had to be scaled up in many small steps. This procedure was very expensive and the results unreliable. Therefore, large safety margins were incorporated in scale-up procedures, which often resulted in a significant unintended overcapacity of the designed plant. [Pg.194]

Blowdown valves shall be provided so that each section of pipeline between main-line valves can be blown down to open atmosphere only. The sizes and capacity of the connections for blowing down the line... [Pg.160]

Because the crushing action is intermittent, the loading on the machine is uneven and the crusher therefore incorporates a heavy flywheel. The power requirements of the crusher depend upon size and capacity and vary from 7 to about 70 kW, the latter figure corresponding to a feed rate of 10 kg/s. [Pg.108]

Liquid-Piston Type This type is illustrated in Fig. 10-97. These compressors are offered as single-stage units for pressure differentials up to about 0.52 MPa (75 Ibf/in ) in the smaller sizes and capacities up to 6.8 X 10 mVh (4000 fF/min) when used with a lower pressure differential. Staging is employed for higher pressure differentials. These units have found wide application as vacuum pumps on wet-vacuum service. Inlet and discharge ports are located in the impeller hub. As the vaned impeller rotates, centrifugal force drives the sealing liquid... [Pg.56]

For working with small amounts of substances, laboratory ware of a small size and capacity is used, for example, 2- and 10-ml flasks, 20-, 10-, and 5-ml beakers, etc. [Pg.20]

Proprietary equipment is provided "off the shelf in limited sizes and capacities. Special sizes that would fit particular applications more closely often arc more expensive than a larger... [Pg.1]

Some of the fluidized bed dryers of Figure 9.13 could be equipped with sprays and adapted to granulation. The dryer performance data of Tables 9.14 and 9.15 may afford some concept of the sizes and capacities of suitable granulators, particularly when the sprays are somewhat dilute and evaporation is a substantial aspect of the process. [Pg.363]

Equipment size and capacity The mill should be large enough to delump the entire batch within a reasonable time period to minimize manufacturing time and prevent the material from drying during this operation. [Pg.215]

In addition to the larger and larger turbines under development, residential customers can also invest in small turbines of about 24-feet in diameter that stand on towers from 35 to 140 feet high. These systems have the potential to save users between 30% and 90% on their electric bills. Prices for the systems (including installation) run between 8,500 and 80,000, depending on the size and capacity of the equipment. [Pg.42]

The amount of material added can be measured by either weight or volume. If the material added is by weight, the size and capacity of the scale must be taken into account. Electronic scales are based on the number of counts in a given range. Typical figures may be 1 in 3,000,1 in 10,000, or 1 in 20,000. For a given range, these will control the readability of the scale. The control is illustrated in Table 3.6. [Pg.59]

Because of the size of organic dairy, hard cheese production is primarily accomplished through small family-owned cheese plants, which have the size and capacity to segregate the milk and produce a fine cheese. Many cheeses are produced organically mild and sharp Cheddar, low-fat cheeses, farmhouse cheeses, Colby, Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack, Feta, Mozzarella, Provolone, Parmesan and Romano, to name a few. [Pg.129]
