The process of adsorption on carbon is applicable to wastewaters and polluted air. Treated waters may be suitable for reuse in industrial processes and can be discharged safely to the sewer system if removal efficiencies are high enough. Hazardous constituents of no commercial value that are removed may be disposed in burial sites after they have been stabilized. The high capacity of activated carbon for many compounds is attributable to the large surface area of the carbon (500-1500 m2 g-1). [Pg.170]

A major complaint of clinical sites is the difficulty and time required for data entry (when they have to enter the data through a keyboard) and the effort required to resolve queries, which are often returned weeks or even months after a patient visit. Machine-read data, whether collected by optical mark read or SmartPen , ensure that data are both entered and validated, with queries returned, in a matter of minutes after they are recorded. Coupled with a quick feedback loop, this system ensures that query rates are typically about one-tenth those for web-based EDC systems and even lower for paper-and-hand entry systems. Furthermore no nucleation was observed in the experimental time in any ampoules at any supersaturation levels if there was no stirrer in the ampoule. This implies that the heterogeneous nucleation was Induced by the presence of the stirrer, probably by enhancing the nucleation at the sites where fine scratches exist. This fact suggests that the solution is stable if there are no possible seed crystals in the system. The existence of the D-enantiomer in the seed crystals is therefore very likely to initiate the secondary nucleation after they grow to attain sufficient sizes, which results in the sudden purity decrease of the product crystals. [Pg.258]

Amphetamines not only mimic the action of norepinephrine and dopamine they also boost the levels of these neurotransmitters in a synaptic cleft by blocking their removal. Normally, neurotransmitters are reabsorbed by presynaptic neurons after they have exerted their effect on postsynaptic receptor sites. This process, commonly called neurotransmitter reuptake and illustrated in Figure 14.24, is the body s way of recycling neurotransmitters, molecules that are difficult to synthesize. Special membrane-embedded proteins are required to pull once-used neurotransmitter molecules back into a presynaptic neuron. Amphetamines inactivate norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake proteins by binding to them. As a consequence, the concentration of these stimulating neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft is maintained at a higher-than-normal level. [Pg.497]

The most important point is the effect of thermal history upon the equilibrium level of cobalt and zinc ions in solution. Within experimental error, the results obtained with the 45 °C—two day systems are identical to the 45°C systems which had received a prior one-day treatment at 5°C. The duration of the experiments has very little effect upon the equilibrium distribution, as evidenced by the fact that the results obtained by longterm equilibrations at both temperatures and for both ions were nearly identical to those shown in Table III. Most important however is the finding that the equilibrium levels of cobalt and zinc at 5°C are significantly higher than these which are obtained after a 45°C treatment. This indicates that the 5°C distribution over the various possible sites, as induced by a 45°C pretreatment, differs from the normal low-temperature distribution in that a significant portion of the adsorbed bivalent ions which participate in the 45°C equilibrium no longer do so at 5°C. In other words, when returned to 5°C, part of the solid-phase metal ions appear irreversibly sequestered in sites where they are out of reach at low temperature. [Pg.238]
