Single-parent family

In two 1990s studies of high schools in Illinois, published in the November 2000 issue of the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, researchers found that white and Hispanic teens from strong, two-parent families were less likely to abuse inhalants than those from single-parent families and that Asian students whose academic performance was poor were more likely to use inhalants than high-achievers were. 

Grandparent-visitation laws did not create that erosion. More varied and complicated family structures have arisen because of divorce, decisions not to marry, single-parent families, remarriages and step-families, parents who abandon their children to temporary caretakers and children being raised by third parties because parents are deemed unfit. 

Since the baby boom of the 1950s, families in this country have been growing smaller. Today, somewhere between 20 and 30 percent of dual- and single-parent families are limited to an only child. Many factors lie behind this change. 

In a two-parent household, a lot may be done for the only child. Satisfying his or her desires often becomes a primary focus of parental concern. In a single-parent family, however, indulgence of the only child tends to be qualified...

School-based health centers are uniquely positioned to provide services to students who are most in need. Becoming a single parent creates a squeeze there is more to do, with less adult support to get it all done. In consequence, the single mother or father usually turns to the only child to share more work, to give more help, to take more responsibility, to exercise more independence, to show more consideration, to participate more in family decisions, to do without some of what was previously given, and to do more of what he or she may not necessarily like. 

Sometimes the single parent needs to clarify the limits of decision making to which the only child is entitled. "Just because I want you to understand and help me think about where our money goes, that doesn t mean you get to choose the way we spend. It s my job to determine what we can afford." The only child needs to understand that input doesn t guarantee outcome, that influence doesn t mean control, that responsibility doesn t mean authority, that adults are not bound by many of the rules a child must live by, and that being a "partner" in the family doesn t entitle him or her to an equal say. An only child of a single parent can presume more power of responsibility than is appropriate.
