Single-parent family

In two 1990s studies of high schools in Illinois, published in the November 2000 issue of the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, researchers found that white and Hispanic teens from strong, two-parent families were less likely to abuse inhalants than those from single-parent families and that Asian students whose academic performance was poor were more likely to use inhalants than high-achievers were. [Pg.262]

Grandparent-visitation laws did not create that erosion. More varied and complicated family structures have arisen because of divorce, decisions not to marry, single-parent families, remarriages and step-families, parents who abandon their children to temporary caretakers and children being raised by third parties because parents are deemed unfit. [Pg.311]

Since the baby boom of the 1950s, families in this country have been growing smaller. Today, somewhere between 20 and 30 percent of dual- and single-parent families are limited to an only child. Many factors lie behind this change. [Pg.9]

In a two-parent household, a lot may be done for the only child. Satisfying his or her desires often becomes a primary focus of parental concern. In a single-parent family, however, indulgence of the only child tends to be qualified... [Pg.31]

Most low SES families are single-parent families. More than 80% of single families are headed by women. More than 50% of all black children live with just one parent, usually the mother. Overall, one in five children live in single-parent families. Among families headed by women with children, more than 50% are living below the poverty level, compared with less than 20% for all women with children. [Pg.638]

However, it should also be clear that it is not easy for women to survive as heads of single-parent families. Female-headed households face a situation of relative social isolation. Especially in the early stages of the domestic cycle, single parent women must both work for money and do all the domestic chores. This leaves no time to establish and extend relationships. Indeed, it is often difficult for them to maintain relationships with kin. There is the money problem too. Female-headed households. [Pg.102]

In the second passage there is no use of T and the passage does not refer to the writer herself. In academic fashion she has been written out of it. The question of single-parent families is treated as a social and economic issue rather than as an individual matter, so that the family is placed in a wider context. The title of the book tells us that the discussion is about poverty in Mexico, which we would not know from the extract. The information about single-parent families in this extract sounds authoritative, and makes categorical generalizations about the economic situation of female-headed families. We would expect to find out about the sources for this information in the book s references section since the use of a comprehensive referencing system and the use of other writers for information and ideas is one mark of... [Pg.105]

The standardized nature of interim housing can miss out the special needs of sections of an affected population. These can include pregnant and lactating mothers, the elderly, the blind, the wheel chair bound, the bed ridden, single parent families, and those with medical or mental challenges. It can also happen in tmexpected areas. For example, it was unfortunate that a Maori... [Pg.1243]

School-based health centers are uniquely positioned to provide services to students who are most in need. Most sbhcs are established in low-income communities with inadequate health care resources and many unmet health care needs. This is reflected in a 1998-1999 survey of sbhcs nationally two-thirds of the population served by the centers were members of a minority group (National Assembly on School-Based Health Care, 2000). Studies of children with special health care needs reveal that those who face the most serious problems in accessing health care are children who live at or below the federal poverty line, live in single-parent families, are uninsured, are older children and teens, or members of a racial or ethnic minority group, sbhcs are designed to provide easily accessible health care services to this population. [Pg.228]

Becoming a single parent creates a squeeze there is more to do, with less adult support to get it all done. In consequence, the single mother or father usually turns to the only child to share more work, to give more help, to take more responsibility, to exercise more independence, to show more consideration, to participate more in family decisions, to do without some of what was previously given, and to do more of what he or she may not necessarily like. [Pg.32]

Sometimes the single parent needs to clarify the limits of decision making to which the only child is entitled. "Just because I want you to understand and help me think about where our money goes, that doesn t mean you get to choose the way we spend. It s my job to determine what we can afford." The only child needs to understand that input doesn t guarantee outcome, that influence doesn t mean control, that responsibility doesn t mean authority, that adults are not bound by many of the rules a child must live by, and that being a "partner" in the family doesn t entitle him or her to an equal say. An only child of a single parent can presume more power of responsibility than is appropriate. [Pg.34]

The child s sense of family partnership can get particularly difficult, and serious tensions can arise, when the single parent becomes involved in an adult love relationship, or... [Pg.34]

To keep an only child from becoming unduly possessive of the single parent, it helps for the mother or father to insist on a separate social life of his or her own. "Going out is my decision. I love being with you, but I also want adult companionship for friendship. I want to keep open the possibility of a romantic relationship, perhaps one day even of remarriage. I promise that if any social relationship I have becomes serious, I will let you know, and you will have time to get to know that person. Should we decide to marry, there will still be enough of my love to go around. You will always be my child, and all three of us together will work out whatever new adjustments are required for us to become a family."... [Pg.36]

Contrast yesterday s model with today s, in which many professionals - both women and men -also parent young children (sometimes as single parents), care for elderly parents, and/or are part of a two-income family. Women and men increasingly must choose between the conflicting priorities of their careers and their family obligations. [Pg.22]
