Scott and Simpson studied the adsorption of ahphatic alcohols, aldehydes and carboxylic acids in binary mixtures with water by ODS-2 sUica [9]. They found that the distribution coefficient increases exponentially with the carbon number of the moderator. When using an aliphatic moderator having a chain length of four or five carbon atoms, the surface of a bonded phase could be completely covered with a monolayer. They stated further that the chromatographic characteristics of the surface could be changed by choosing appropriately active groups. [Pg.214]

Simpson (1988) reviewed studies which considered individual differences in risk perception and the effects of these differences on behavior. A study by Verhaegen et al. (1985) looked at three groups of workers in wire mills. The first group comprised those who had been directly involved in events which led to the accident (the "active" group). The second group ("passive") were those who had only been involved indirectly ("innocent bystanders") and the third group were a control group who had not been involved in accidents at all. [Pg.137]

In-vitro fretting corrosion experiments have been performed using weight loss , polarisation and corrosion potential measurements. Thull and Schaldach have performed corrosion potential versus time measurements in-vitro in a joint simulator with different values of applied load. Brown and Simpson have performed similar studies with screw/plate fretting. Both studies found larger shifts towards active potentials with larger loads . [Pg.473]

Currently, treatment of DSP and ATN is similar to many other neuropathies that have predominantly painful sensory involvement (Mendell and Sahenk 2003 Gonzalez-Duarte et al. 2007). It is purely symptomatic as there are no proven regenerative therapies to reverse the underlying process. An 8-month prospective pilot study reported an improvement in subjective quantitative sensory testing (QST) in HIV-infected patients who responded to HAART (Martin et al. 2000). The patients who did not respond to HAART did not show any improvements in QST. It is possible that suppression of viral load will slow the progression of DSP. Some studies have found a correlation between viral load and incidence (Childs et al. 1999), or severity (Simpson et al. 2002) of sensory neuropathy. Others, however, did not find any correlation between plasma viral loads and incidence of DSP or ATN (Brew et al. 2003). [Pg.76]

Simpson and Burt have studied the same reactions in the presence of various amounts of ethanol and have plotted graphs of phosphonate (81 R = Ph) and phenyl acetylene produced against moles of alcohol added. Acetylene in the product reached a maximum (around 60%) when two moles of ethanol were added and stayed fairly constant beyond this, which suggests that the attack-on-halogen contribution to the mechanism is approximately 60%. The rest of the reaction presumably follows some other mechanism and the authors suggest the addition-elimination route (79) in view of the isolation of the phosphonate (83) from the reaction of tri(isopropyl) phosphite with the bromoacetylene (84). [Pg.84]

Eugene S. Simpson, Glenn M. Thompson, Anthony Muller, Richard Zito, Juan Carlos Lerman and other associates at the University of Arizona have been most generous with their time and ideas. Many of the researchers cited in our review have also contributed to our study in ways too numerous to mention, to these and especially to Professor Hans Oeschger and Dr. David Elmore we owe our gratitude. The present study was funded by U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Contract NRC-04-78-272. [Pg.219]
