Confirmatory tests for secondary aliphatic amines. Simon s test. To a solution or suspension of 1 drop of the compound or to an equivalent quantity of its solution in 3 ml of water, add 2 drops of freshly prepared acetaldehyde solution, followed by 1 drop of a 1 per cent aqueous solution of disodium pentacyanonitrosoferrate(m). A blue coloration is produced within 5 minutes, after which the colour gradually changes through greenish-blue to yellow.

It is used as a reagent in qualitative analysis for the detection of sulphides, sulphites, aldehydes and ketones containing the CH3—CO—R group. It is also used as a reference compound for the cahbration of a Mossbauer spectrometer. Sodium nitroprusside is used to detect iUicit substances, such as secondary amines, in forensic laboratories (Simon s test). It is used to control blood pressure and to treat hypertension. 

Freshly prepared acetaldehyde may be obtained by heating a small coil of copper wire to redness, and plimging it repeatedly into 5 ml of 50 % alcohol in a heat-resisting glass test-tube. Repeat the heating and immersion in the alcohol several times, cooling the test-tube under the tap. Use the final cold solution for Simon s test.

The hrst neutral ionophore molecules, valinomycin and nonactin, were borrowed from nature, but soon thereafter good success was also achieved with synthetic ionophores. Simon s results initiated intensive research aiming to design, prepare, and test different types of organic molecules in ion-selective potentiometric sensor preparations. This work is still in progress today.

The most satisfactory test for caramel is to shake with Fuller s earth, as recommended - by Crampton and Simons. If the colour is due to caramel and a grade of I uller s earth is used, which experience has proved suitable, the solution, after filtering, is yellow or colourless. This test does not positively identify the colour, as some other brown substances may give similar reactions, but no such substance is liable to be present in vanilla extract. 

Simone and Popino have considered the stability of neomycin in both hydrophobic and hydrophilic ointment bases. No loss of potency over a period of 1 year at 20°C was reported for formulations containing carboxymethylcellulose, polyethylene glycol(P.E.G.) or white-soft paraffin. However, formulations containing hydrous lanolin were reported to be unstable. All materials used in the formulations were obtained from U.S. sources. Coates et al3°l investigated the use of P.E.G. from British sources and described neomycin as being incompatible with the materials tested.
