The production of aluminum begins with the mining and beneficiation of bauxite. At the mine (usually of the surface type), bauxite ore is removed to a crusher. The crushed ore is then screened and stockpiled, ready for delivery to an alumina plant. In some cases, ore is upgraded by beneficiation (washing, size classification, and separation of liquids and solids) to remove unwanted materials such as clay and silica. [Pg.137]

Fused silica is a general classification within which is a range of varieties and types with differences in purity, transmission and grade. This glass may be used up to 900°C in continuous service it resists attack by a great many chemical reagents, rapid attack occurring only in hydrofluoric acid and concentrated alkali solutions. [Pg.870]

A. Determination of silica in a soluble silicate Discussion. Most of the silicates which come within the classification of soluble silicates are the orthosilicates formed from SiO units in combination with just one or two cations. More highly condensed silicate structures give rise to the insoluble silicates. [Pg.486]

The Lux-Flood theory relates to oxide melts. Geologists have often used acid-base concepts for the empirical classification of igneous silicate rocks (Read, 1948). Silica is implicitly assumed to be responsible for acidity, and the silica content of a rock is used as a measure of its acid-base balance ... [Pg.17]

Silica-based restricted access materials (RAM) have been developed for cleanup in bioanalysis, first for low molecular weight compounds in biofluids (Rbeida et al., 2005) and subsequently for biopolymers such as peptides (Wagner et al., 2002). A classification of different types of RAM has been given by Boos and Rudolphi (1997). Novel RAMs with strong cation-exchange functionality have been synthesized and implemented in the sample cleanup of biofluids. Racaityte et al. (2000) have shown that this type of RAM is highly suitable for the online extraction and analysis of... [Pg.210]

IUPAC classification, mesoporous materials are defined as porous materials with diameters in the range 2-50 nm, which is rather dose to the dimensions of functional biomolecules such as proteins. Therefore, unexplored phenomena and functions could be observed for biomolecules confined in mesopore channels due to their restricted motion and orientation. In this chapter, we briefly introduce recent developments on the immobilization of biomolecules in mesoporous media, where the use of mesoporous silica and mesoporous carbon are mainly discussed. [Pg.114]

Adsorption HPLC is the classification in which the highly polar silica particles are exposed (no adsorbed or bonded liquid phase). Aluminum oxide particles fit this description too and are also readily available as the stationary phase. As mentioned earlier, this classification can also be thought of as normal phase... [Pg.375]

Sihcon dioxide exists in several structural forms polymorphic crystalline sihca, synthetic quartz crystals, amorphous silica, and vitreous silica. This classification is not complete as there are other forms of silica synthesized for speciahzed apphcations. Various forms of sihca are mentioned briefly below. [Pg.823]

One way to develop an in silica tool to predictive promiscuity is to apply a NB classifier for modeling, a technique that compares the frequencies of features between selective and promiscuous sets of compounds. Bayesian classification was applied in many studies and was recently compared to other machine-learning techniques [26, 27, 43, 51, 52]. [Pg.307]

G.l.c. papers of interest include the classification of 22 acyclic monoterpenoid alcohols according to retention indexes, resolution of cyclic ketones [e.g. ( )-menthone, ( )-isomenthone] as diethyl (+)-tartrate acetals, and the use of lanthanide shift reagents to resolve non-terpenoid racemic epoxides. The occurrence and prevention of monoterpenoid hydrocarbon isomerization during silica gel chromatography has been examined and the separation of monoterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids by gel permeation chromatography is reported. Monoterpenoid hydrocarbons have been selectively extracted from essential oils using dimethylsilicone. ... [Pg.8]

Traditionally, the sol-gel process has been used for the preparation of silica nanoparticles via the hydrolysis of alkoxides in organic solvents [52,53]. Similar hydrolysis and condensation carried out in w/o microemulsion offers robust control over the synthesis process. W/o emiflsion-mediated sol-gel synthesis is currently used for the fabrication of pure sihca, as well as inorganic and organic dye-doped silica nanoparticles. The synthesis of sihca and dye-doped nanoparticles is classified in the following sections on the basis of the classification of the head group fimctionahty of the major surfactant used. [Pg.196]

In addition to the classification of liquid chromatographic enantioseparation methods by technical description, these methods could further be classified according to the chemical structure of the diverse CSPs. The chiral selector moiety varies from large molecules, based on natural or synthetic polymers in which the chirality may be based on chiral subunits (monomers) or intrinsically on the total structure (e.g., helicity or chiral cavity), to low molecular weight molecules which are irreversibly and/or covalently bound to a rigid hard matrix, most often silica gel. [Pg.195]
