Fenvalerate intoxication effects may be reversible. Tadpoles of the northern leopard frog (Rana pipiens) that survived LC50 concentrations of the 5,5-isomer for 96 h appeared normal 7 days after being placed in clean water (Matema 1991). Fenvalerate-protective agents include diazepam and endosulfan. Diazepam provides up to 14-fold protection to frogs against toxic doses of fenvalerate (Cole and Casida 1983) endosulfan provides limited protection to estuarine fish and shrimp (Scott et al. 1987 Trim 1987). [Pg.1107]

Four unstable sulfate esters (373-376) of known furanosesterterpenes were obtained from Ircinia variabilis and from /. or os from the northern Adriatic Sea [328], The 22-O-sulfates of palinurin (377) and fasiculatin (378) were isolated from 7. variabilis and from /. fasiculata respectively. Both were toxic to brine shrimp [329]. Ircinianin sulfate (379) was isolated from /. (Psammocinia) wistarii from the Great Barrier Reef as a very unstable metabolite [330]. [Pg.673]

FIGURE 37.9 Microscopic view of Nodularia spumigena which occurs on occasions as a toxic planktonic bloom during summer months in earthen ponds at shrimp farms (Penaeus monodon) on Palmers Island, northern New South Wales, Australia (trichome width of 12 J,m, 400x magnification). [Pg.797]

Salmon farm Wild salmon contains predominantly the (3S,3 S)-enantiomer. In fanned salmon, fed with shrimp bran, which is mainly produced from northern prawn (Pandalus borealis) or with an extract from the green alga Haematococcus pluvialis, the (3S,3 S)-enantiomer is also the main enantiomer. However, if the astaxanthin comes from the basidiomycetous yeast Phaffia rhodozyma or its sexual form Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous, or from the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), the (3R,3 R)-enantiomerprevails.
