Defence expenditure is not mentioned in Nicholas Crafts comprehensive analysis in his Britain s Relative Economic Performance 1870-1999 (London Institute of Economic Affairs, 2002), but may have been a contributory factor to some of the reasons that he does give cartelisation and poor productivity in firms that were kept going instead of being allowed to fail (defence departments tried to keep contractors going, often peddling out small orders, so that these firms would be available in war) and poor productivity in nationalised industries (which include the royal dockyards and royal ordnance factories, and one major aircraft firm. Short Brothers, taken over in 1943, and kept going on account of the employment it offered in Northern Ireland long after it would have otherwise been closed down). [Pg.9]

Thanks are due to Short Brothers Pic, and the Department of Education, N. Ireland who helped support this research. [Pg.327]

Short Brothers pic of Northern Ireland, part of Bombardier Aerospace, developed a narrow weaving machine (Wilson et al., 1999) called five-axis weaving to produce spatially reinforced composites (SpaRC). These SpaRC are designed to have fiber tows oriented in five axes, 0°, 90°, 45°, and Z directions. A preform with mie layer of 45° was woven on this loom. Quinn et al. (2008) shows that, by increasing the amount of Z fibers in 3D orthogonal stractures, the damage area after impact was reduced, and low-crimp, multiaxis, multilayer woven sfructures offer improved damage tolerance. [Pg.257]

Most of the commercial tree plantations that produce wood for captive use as a raw material in manufacturing operations use a portion as fuel. Examples of short-rotation plantations are Hsted in Table 38 (127). Paper companies in the southeastern United States are reported to have short-rotation plantings also, eg, Weyerhaeuser, James River Corp., Buckeye Cellulose, and Lykes Brothers, but the intensity of maintenance is not known (127). [Pg.42]

Petersburg in 1725. Catherine was so desperate to secure Daniel that she agreed to offer a second chair to his brother, Nikolas. Unfortunately, Nikolas died of tuberculosis shortly after arriving in Russia. Despondent over his death, Daniel thought of returning home, but stayed when his father suggested that one of his own students, Leonard Euler, would make an able assistant. [Pg.141]

Sir Humphry Davy s life was a short one, and his last years were marred by continued illness. In a letter written hi Rome in February, 1829, he said, If I die, I hope that I have done my duty and that my life has not been vain and useless (50). Three weeks later he was stricken with palsy, from which he never recovered. Even the devotion and medical skill of his younger brother, Dr. John Davy, were in vain. [Pg.733]

With his regiment, Nikolay advanced through Latvia, Poland, Silesia, and Bohemia, and he was awarded the medal Za Otvagu (For Bravery), which forever remained his most favorite award. He came back in 1945 from Prague, at the same time as Shura, his younger brother. They returned too late to see their father, who had died in 1943 their mother was very ill and died shortly afterwards. In 1946 Nikolay married Vera, who was waiting for him, and he began to restore his career in science after six years in the army—from October 21, 1939 to October 20, 1945. [Pg.5]

US Treasury auctions restrict bidders to 35% of supply in any auction, but these rules have occasionally been circumvented. In 1991 Salomon Brothers admitted to submitting fraudulent bids in the names of their clients in order to squeeze short sellers in the when-issued market. [Pg.157]

Physical examination revealed a hyperactive boy with normal height and head circumference. His face was somewhat square with a prominent forehead, everted ears, and absent left lower incisor, like his elder brother (Fig. 1-lb). Developmental quotient was assessed as 47% of normal. He had a short attention span but no social aversion or hand mannerisms. At the age of 20 months, EEG and acoustic brainstem response were unremarkable however, from 18 months, massive epileptic discharges had become evident in the bilateral parieto-occipital regions during sleep. [Pg.3]

A 10-month-old girl developed apnea, ventricular fibrillation, and a metabolic acidosis, and died shortly afterwards. Her 2-year-old brother had fed her crack cocaine. At autopsy the brain had a thinned corpus callosum, ranging in thickness from 0.2 to 0.5 cm. There were two pieces of crack cocaine in the duodenum and high concentrations of cocaine in the blood and other tissues. [Pg.524]

An Overdose of Downers The old saying "The cobbler s children go without shoes" applies to the children of physicians, too. Because they deal with sick people all day long, doctors tend to give short shrift to the complaints of family members. As the daughter ol a medical doctor, I should know. When I or any of my brothers or sisters came down with anything more serious than a hangnail, my father s standard procedure w as to ply us with sleeping pills. [Pg.239]
