Davy. Sir Humphry

Sir Walter Scott, 1771-1832. Scottish novelist and poet. His writings contain many interesting allusions to his uncle, Dr. Daniel Rutherford. Scott s circle of friends included Dr William Hyde Wollaston, Sir David Brewster, Dr. John Davy, Sir Humphry Davy, and Joseph Black. [Pg.239]

Accdg to Davis (Ref 4, p 402), FP was first prepd by Davy (Sir Humphry, 1778 to 1829) about 1825, by adding ammonia water to a soln of Pt sulfate, boiling the ppt with a soln of potash, washing, and allowing to dry. It was exploded by heat, but not easily by percussion or friction. No formula is given... [Pg.614]

DAVY, SIR HUMPHRY (1778-1829). Bom in Cornwell. Davy was the first to isolate ihe alkali metals and recognize the identity of chemical and electrical energy. A pioneer in Ihe science of electrochemistry, he carried out basic studies of electrolysis of sails anti waicr, and his application of electricity lo the decomposition of molten caustic potash led to the isolation of metallic potassium. [Pg.469]

Davy, Sir Humphry (1778-1829)- An Engl chemist who isolated Na, K, Ba, Ca Sr metals by electrolysis and devised the miner s safety lamp, briefly described in Vol 3, P C362-R, under Coal Mine Explosions and Fires Ref Hackh s (1946), 253-54... [Pg.440]

However, in 1810, Dr. John Davy, Sir Humphry Davy s younger brother, expressed the opinion that oxymuriatic acid was, as a matter of fact, an elementary substance. This opinion was not at all accepted and several scientists, in order to refute the arguments of Dr. Davy, tried therefore to remove oxygen content of oxymuriatic acid by treatment with charcoal at a white heat or with carbon monoxide [Scheme 1],... [Pg.104]

Davy, Sir Humphry (1778-1829). Laid foundation of electrochemistry studied electrolysis of salts in water and other electrochemical phenomena isolated Na and K. [Pg.1364]

Davy, Sir Humphry (i778-i829) British chemist, who studied gases at the Pneumatic Institute in Bristol, where he discovered the anaesthetic properties of dinitrogen oxide (nitrous oxide). He moved to the Royal Institution, London, in 1801 and five years later isolated potassium and sodium by electrolysis. He also prepared barium, boron, calcium, and strontium as well as proving that chlorine and iodine are elements. In 1816 he invented the Davy lamp. [Pg.222]

Davy, Sir Humphry (1778-1829) A chemist, teacher, and inventor born in England, Davy began conducting scientific experiments as a child. As a teen he worked as a surgeon s apprentice and became addicted to nitrous oxide. He later researched galvanism and electrolysis, discovered the elements sodium, chlorine, and potassium, and contributed to the discovery of iodine. He invented the Davy safety lamp for use in coal mines, was a founder of the Zoological Society of London, and served as president of the Royal Society. [Pg.2005]
