Sir Walter Scott, 1771-1832. Scottish novelist and poet. His writings contain many interesting allusions to his uncle, Dr. Daniel Rutherford. Scott s circle of friends included Dr William Hyde Wollaston, Sir David Brewster, Dr. John Davy, Sir Humphry Davy, and Joseph Black. [Pg.239]

Dr. John Bostock tried unsuccessfully to use Hatchett s artificial tan as a test for jelly [gelatine]. Although it had been stated on the highest authority, that of Mr. Hatchett and Mr. Davy. . . that isinglass consists of nearly pure jelly, Dr. Bostock found that isinglass from the shops contained a certain amount of insoluble matter which he believed to be coagulated albumen. Dr. G. Melandri of Milan also investigated Hatchett s tannin. [Pg.383]

Sir Humphry Davy s life was a short one, and his last years were marred by continued illness. In a letter written hi Rome in February, 1829, he said, If I die, I hope that I have done my duty and that my life has not been vain and useless (50). Three weeks later he was stricken with palsy, from which he never recovered. Even the devotion and medical skill of his younger brother, Dr. John Davy, were in vain. [Pg.733]

However, in 1810, Dr. John Davy, Sir Humphry Davy s younger brother, expressed the opinion that oxymuriatic acid was, as a matter of fact, an elementary substance. This opinion was not at all accepted and several scientists, in order to refute the arguments of Dr. Davy, tried therefore to remove oxygen content of oxymuriatic acid by treatment with charcoal at a white heat or with carbon monoxide [Scheme 1],... [Pg.104]

Humphrey Davy himself, but by his younger brother Dr. John Davy [466b,466c]. These exchanges are described in some detail in Dobbin s extensive account of the history of the discovery of phosgene [540], and will be only summarised here. [Pg.4]

Dr. John Davy became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1834 and died in 1868, survived by a son and daughter [1742a]. A short biography has been written by Ross [1742a], although (somewhat surprisingly) his most marked contribution to science, the discovery of phosgene, is not mentioned. [Pg.12]

I would like to acknowledge the numerous scientists at the Parke-Davis Research Unit who contributed this project over many years. In particular I note the senior staff who initiated the project. Dr. David HonA/ell (Medicinal Chemistry), Dr. Ray Hill and Professor John Hughes (Pharmacology). Dr. John Hunter (Pharmacology) and Dr. Geoff Woodruff (Pharmacology) also made leading contributions. [Pg.297]
