The GALDI-MS measurements covered a selection of natural ester waxes, both from animal (beeswax, shellac wax, spermaceti) and vegetable sources (candelilla, cane, carnauba, cotton fibre, esparto, ouricouri). Generally, the waxes were readily distinguishable by their characteristic distribution of molecular masses. In some cases, markers could be identified on the basis of literature data. [Pg.150]

Although there are many other kinds of insect waxes, only two are of economic importance namely, shellac wax and Chinese insect wax. Shellac wax is derived from the lac insect, a parasite that feeds on the sap of the lac tree indigenous to India. The commercial wax is not ordinarily the native Indian lac wax, but is a by-product recovered from the dewaxing of shellac spar varnishes. Lac wax melts at 72-80°C, whereas commercial shellac wax melts at 80-84.5°C. Its high melting point and dielectric properties favor its use in the electrical industry for insulation. Chinese insect wax is the product of the scale insect. [Pg.1746]

The action of dichloroethyl sulphide on parchment, documents, seals, deed papers, handwriting, etc., has also been studied. On these objects dichloroethyl sulphide in the vapour form has been applied without having any noticeable action, though in the liquid state it penetrates paper, shellac, wax, etc. ... [Pg.226]

Collective name for resins of plant or animal origin - the sole example of the latter that has attained technical importance is shellac (shellac wax). The plant natural resins are based on secretions exudates) of particular plants, mostly trees, from natural or artificial (cuts in the bark) injuries. These exudates normally occur in the form of sticky masses that harden in the air as a result of evaporation of volatile components and/or polymerization and oxidation reactions. [Pg.425]

Sandarac. Light yellow conifer resin consisting of a mixture of terpenoid resin acids, especially pimaric (80%), callitrolic (10%), and sandaricinic acids (10%). S. is obtained from the bark of the North African sandarac cypress [Tetraclinis articulata (Callitris quadri-va/vis)].Mp. 135-140 °C, soluble in many organic solvents and turpentine oil. S. is used in the manufacture of special paints, polishes, putty, dental cement, and as a substitute for shellac (shellac wax). [Pg.569]

Shellac (shellac wax). S. is a hard, tough resin (mp. 65-85 °C) obtained from secretions of the female lac insect (Kerria lacca, Coccideae). Chemically S. consists of esterified carboxylic acids, especially hy-droxy fatty acids (e. g., aleuritic acid), as well as the terpenoid shellolic acid C15H20O6, Mr 296.32, mp. 204-207 °C, [a] 3 +26° (CHCI3)). S. is used in coatings for foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. [Pg.584]

Shellac wax (mp. 72-82°C) is a component (ca. 6%) of S., from which it is obtained by extraction with petroleum ether. It contains 80-82% esters of mostly sat-... [Pg.584]
