Shellolic acid

Professor Yates research, reported in over 200 papers, covered a remarkably wide range. He established the structures of complex natural products, such as mangostin, shellolic acid, haplophytine, and the fecapentaenes. He was successful in synthesizing such complex natural products as gambogic acid, various bridged-ring steroids, and cedrene. 

Cyclic sesquiterpenes having the cedrene skeleton have also been isolated. When R = COOH, this structure (11) has been named shellolic acid.

Details of the extensive chemical work on a number of the sesquiterpenoids isolated from the basic hydrolysate of lac resin, the secretion of Laccifer luca, have appeared. These include shellolic acid (139, = -C02H, = CHaOH), ... 

Shellac (shellac wax). S. is a hard, tough resin (mp. 65-85 °C) obtained from secretions of the female lac insect (Kerria lacca, Coccideae). Chemically S. consists of esterified carboxylic acids, especially hy-droxy fatty acids (e. g., aleuritic acid), as well as the terpenoid shellolic acid C15H20O6, Mr 296.32, mp. 204-207 °C, [a] 3 +26° (CHCI3)). S. is used in coatings for foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. 

Shellolic acid n. Very complex constituent of shellac believed to consist of a tricyclic nucleus, with two carboxyl and two hydroxyl groups.
