There are many factors that make these drugs desirable to sexual predators. Because they are, for the most part, tasteless, odorless, and colorless, the drugs are virtually undetectable. All traces of the drugs usually leave the body within 72 hours of ingestion and are not found in any routine toxicology screen or blood test. Therefore, physicians and police have to be looking for the drugs specifically and have to work fast to find them in a victim s system.

In February 2000, Wisconsin s oldest prison inmate, a ninty-five—year-old man, was resentenced as a sexual predator. A psychologist testified for the state and said psychological tests performed on Ellefson indicated if he was given a chance, he would commit a [sex] crime. After only minutes of deliberation, theyftrj found that Ellef J. Ellefson should be committed for mental treatment under the sexual predator law. (Ellefson qualifies as a sexual predator. A young, sexually active, HIV-positive man who fails to so inform his partners does not.)...

Because GHB can sedate people so heavily that they are unaware of what is going on around them, GHB is often referred to as a "date rape drug." A sexual predator... 

Ketamine is used legally as an anesthetic, usually by veterinarians. Yet, it has become a popular illegal drug at raves. It can be injected, smoked, or snorted. Ketamine is yet another club drug that is a notorious date rape drug. Like GHB and Rohypnol, it is often slipped into a person s drink by a sexual predator. 

One of the most common dangers associated with GHB is date rape. Because GHB is usually odorless and tasteless when mixed with a drink, it is easy for a sexual predator to slip it into a victim s drink without the drug being noticed. That is what happened to Samantha Reid, whose true story can be found on the Web site of the PBS program NewsHour. 

Called the "Drink Detective," it is a matchbox-sized drink testing kit that can detect three of the most common date rape drugs that sexual predators slip into drinks GHB, ketamine, and Rohypnol. The kit contains test pads for each of the three drugs, as well as pipettes for applying drops of a drink to the pads. For the first time, people going to bars, raves, or clubs could test their drinks for date rape drugs. 

According to Bloomsbury Innovations, the manufacturer of the Drink Detective, people will not necessarily have to test every drink. Simply having the Drink Detective with them will likely discourage a sexual predator from attempting to spike the person s drink. The Drink Detective was recognized by Popular Science magazine as one of the 100 best new products of 2004.

Ketamine is also widely used by sexual predators as a date rape drug. Like Rohypnol and GHB, ketamine can cause a person to lose consciousness. In either its liquid or powdered form, it can be slipped easily into a victim s drink.

The predators discussed up to this point search for prey by using their ability to perceive certain chemical clues. Some unusual predators have evolved the ability to attract their prey with scents that mimic the odor of a valuable resource (see reviews of chemical mimicry in refs. 9 and 39). Several groups of spiders lure male insect prey with scents that mimic the sex pheromone scents of females of the prey species (see reviews in refs. 9,13,40, and 41). To the best of our knowledge, these spiders are the only predators that mimic sex pheromones. However, the spiders share some similarities with the diverse orchids which mimic insect sex pheromones to lure pollinators (9, 42, 43) and with the predatory fireflies, which practice elaborate mimicry of visual sexual signals to lure their prey heterospecific male fireflies (44).
