Sexual predator

Zinovieff, S. (1991) Hunters and hunted Kamaki and the ambiguities of sexual predation in a Greek town. In R Loizos and E. Papataxiarchis (eds) Contested Identities Gender and Kinship in Modern Greece (pp. 203-220). Princeton Princeton University Press... [Pg.234]

There are many factors that make these drugs desirable to sexual predators. Because they are, for the most part, tasteless, odorless, and colorless, the drugs are virtually undetectable. All traces of the drugs usually leave the body within 72 hours of ingestion and are not found in any routine toxicology screen or blood test. Therefore, physicians and police have to be looking for the drugs specifically and have to work fast to find them in a victim s system. [Pg.15]

That s not wbat I sab. You firb a woman s body without any cbthes, it s a fair bet there was some kirb of sexual assault, at bast. But your run-of-the-mill sexual predator general kills his vbtims straight away, as soon as he s got his rocks off Very occasbnaify you ll get one wbo keeps them aHve until he s tired of pbying with them But wbat this one s doing here, it doesn t make sense. ... [Pg.57]

In February 2000, Wisconsin s oldest prison inmate, a ninty-five—year-old man, was resentenced as a sexual predator. A psychologist testified for the state and said psychological tests performed on Ellefson indicated if he was given a chance, he would commit a [sex] crime. After only minutes of deliberation, theyftrj found that Ellef J. Ellefson should be committed for mental treatment under the sexual predator law. (Ellefson qualifies as a sexual predator. A young, sexually active, HIV-positive man who fails to so inform his partners does not.)... [Pg.90]

The suspicion that, in the final analysis, mental illness is a disease sui generis, unique among diseases, is confirmed by the fact that it is the only disease believed to be capable of causing and excusing crime. In possessing this property, mental illness combines functions previously attributed to the Devil and God. Also, mental illness is the only disease that justifies, as hospitalization, the preventive detention of persons deemed dangerous to themselves and/or others and the incarceration of persons deemed to be sexual predators who have served their prison sentences. [Pg.95]

Because GHB can sedate people so heavily that they are unaware of what is going on around them, GHB is often referred to as a "date rape drug." A sexual predator... [Pg.15]

Ketamine is used legally as an anesthetic, usually by veterinarians. Yet, it has become a popular illegal drug at raves. It can be injected, smoked, or snorted. Ketamine is yet another club drug that is a notorious date rape drug. Like GHB and Rohypnol, it is often slipped into a person s drink by a sexual predator. [Pg.16]

One of the most common dangers associated with GHB is date rape. Because GHB is usually odorless and tasteless when mixed with a drink, it is easy for a sexual predator to slip it into a victim s drink without the drug being noticed. That is what happened to Samantha Reid, whose true story can be found on the Web site of the PBS program NewsHour. [Pg.42]

Called the "Drink Detective," it is a matchbox-sized drink testing kit that can detect three of the most common date rape drugs that sexual predators slip into drinks GHB, ketamine, and Rohypnol. The kit contains test pads for each of the three drugs, as well as pipettes for applying drops of a drink to the pads. For the first time, people going to bars, raves, or clubs could test their drinks for date rape drugs. [Pg.54]

According to Bloomsbury Innovations, the manufacturer of the Drink Detective, people will not necessarily have to test every drink. Simply having the Drink Detective with them will likely discourage a sexual predator from attempting to spike the person s drink. The Drink Detective was recognized by Popular Science magazine as one of the 100 best new products of 2004. [Pg.54]

Ketamine is also widely used by sexual predators as a date rape drug. Like Rohypnol and GHB, ketamine can cause a person to lose consciousness. In either its liquid or powdered form, it can be slipped easily into a victim s drink. [Pg.66]

Vine, E., Shears, J., and van Aerie, R. et al. (2005). Endocrine (sexual) disruption is not a prominent feature in the pike (Esox lucius), a top predator, living in English waters. Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry 24, 1436-1443. [Pg.372]

The predators discussed up to this point search for prey by using their ability to perceive certain chemical clues. Some unusual predators have evolved the ability to attract their prey with scents that mimic the odor of a valuable resource (see reviews of chemical mimicry in refs. 9 and 39). Several groups of spiders lure male insect prey with scents that mimic the sex pheromone scents of females of the prey species (see reviews in refs. 9,13,40, and 41). To the best of our knowledge, these spiders are the only predators that mimic sex pheromones. However, the spiders share some similarities with the diverse orchids which mimic insect sex pheromones to lure pollinators (9, 42, 43) and with the predatory fireflies, which practice elaborate mimicry of visual sexual signals to lure their prey heterospecific male fireflies (44). [Pg.69]

Predator-mediated stabilizing selection on sexual signals has long been a major theme of animal behavior research (Endler, 1987 Ryan, 1990 Zuk et al., 1998),... [Pg.164]

This period is also marked by the deposition of energy substrates - mostly triacyl-glycerols in fatty fish and liver glycogen in lean fish. The rate of accumulation is much lower than that of protein production (O Boyle and Beamish, 1977), a fact explicable from the life strategy of the fish they must attain maximum size and weight as soon as possible before becoming sexually mature, so as to be able to escape predators, to search effectively for food and to evolve optimum reproductive power. Fecundity is directly proportional to... [Pg.95]

Organic growers also use biological control. They are allowed to import natural enemies of pests. This works either through predation or parasitism. This has proven effective for the control of red spider mite and specific caterpillars, and does not affect other insects. And a third technique is to use insect traps ranging from sticky yellow strips to pheromone or sexual lures. The pheromone traps use synthetic extracts of the chemical scents that... [Pg.162]
