Avermectins and Ivermectin. The avermectias are pentacycHc lactones isolated from fermentation products of Streptomjces avermitilis and ivermectin is a semisynthetic chemical, 22,23-dihydroavermectia (46). Ivermectin is effective in very low doses for the control of red spider mites on deciduous fmits, in baits for the control of imported fire ants, and as a parasiticide for Onchocerca volvulus in humans and for catde gmbs. These insecticides appear to function as agonists for the neuroinhibitory transmitter y-aminobutyric acid (GABA) (see Antiparasitic agents, avermectins). 

Diphenylamine has shown activity against the body louse, chiggers, housefly, and, as the chloro derivative, against the red spider mite. Diarylamines have also been reported to have antiradiation activity (48). 

Sodium selenate has been used on a small scale in commercial greenhouses, primarily for growing carnations and chrysanthemums. It is transformed by the plants into volatile selenides, which repel red spiders, mites, thrips, and aphids (see Insect control technology). Sodium selenite is not intended for crops which could ultimately be used as food for humans or domestic animals. 

Compound (X) and its salts are effective systemic insecticides for various species of red spider mites. Absorption by foliage seems to be rapid and different toxicities to different groups of insects and mites is claimed.1 The l.d. 50 for rats is 1-5 mg./kg. 

Red spider mite epidemics at periods of excessive dry weather in areas of heavy rainfall may be serious, but, so far, the duration of the invasions has been short in banana farms. Weather and natural enemies have, to date, quickly brought this pest under control. 

Pests such as aphids, whitefly, and red spider mite use needlelike mouth-parts to pieroe plant stems and suek sap, resulting in redueed vigor and growth distortions (as in aphid damage, shown here). Baeterial infeetions ean also enter the plant via the wounds. Sapsuokers oan transmit viruses, and their waste (honeydew) provides a food souroe on whioh molds thrive. 

Many predatory mites feed mainly on plant-feeding mites here one Is feeding on red spider mite eggs. Certain types ean be purehased as blologleal eontrol agents see p.97). 

Velvet mites Velvet mites are tiny red creatures that swarm on hot, dry paving and usefully eat pests such as red spider mites. 

Keeping plants growing well is the best defense against pests and diseases. Potbound plants in overcrowded pots, watered erratically, will be more prone to pests such as red spider mite and aphids, especially in hot and dry locations such as a sheltered patio. Deal with any problem as it arises check plants regularly and pick off pests or diseased shoots or leaves as you notice them. Remove sickly and badly infested plants.

In summer, mist plants that are susceptible to red spider mite with a fine spray of water.

Organic growers also use biological control. They are allowed to import natural enemies of pests. This works either through predation or parasitism. This has proven effective for the control of red spider mite and specific caterpillars, and does not affect other insects. And a third technique is to use insect traps ranging from sticky yellow strips to pheromone or sexual lures. The pheromone traps use synthetic extracts of the chemical scents that... 

It is of particular importance to watch out for any signs of scab and mildew, as well as aphids, red spider mite and rust mite. Young splice or bnd grafts which are starting to sprout can be damaged by the grapevine weevil [Rhynchites conicus]. In some areas of Europe it is absolutely essential to check the nursery for voles before winter dormancy (catch them with traps or fumigate the burrows).
