Other firms specified in Appendix B engage in several businesses of a fully integrated pharmaceutical company, but not in all of them. In the northeastern United States there is Albany Molecular Research in the Midwest near Chicago there is MediChem Research. Both companies offer traditional and modem medicinal chemistry, custom synthesis, and process research and development, among other services. Abbott Laboratories, itself a fipco, also acts as an outsourcer. It offers its services in chemical development and in making advanced intermediates, custom organic chemicals, and peptides.

Some service firms may restrict themselves to a single business, perhaps temporarily. For examples, the North Carolina firm sarco offers combinatorial chemistry services as do Pharmacopeia in New Jersey and NeoKimia in Quebec. Discovery research services generally include medicinal chemistry by traditional or modem means, custom synthesis, preparation of radiochemicals and stable-isotope-labeled drugs, isolation of drug metabolites, or patent law. 

In Quebec, C/D/N Isotopes specializes in custom synthesis of compounds labeled with stable isotopes as does Mass Trace in Massachusetts. Amersham Pharmacia Biotech in Wisconsin makes radiolabeled nucleotides.

People provide most services thus the selection, training, and motivation of employees are critical tasks for service firms. Interactions with employees can have a significant impact on perceptions of service quality.
