Plastics Network

The flexibility and extensibility of a crosslinked epoxy network are determined by the available glassy-state free volume. If the free volume is insufficient to allow network segmental extensibility via rotational isomeric changes then the brittle mechanical response of the epoxy glass is not controlled by the network structure but rather by macroscopic defects such as microvoids. For epoxies with sufficient free volume that allows plastic network deformation the mechanical response is controlled by the network structure. [Pg.38]

Rechargeable battery designers initially used linear-homo-polymers of ethylene oxide (EO). The initial design of polymer-ethylene-oxide (PEO) batteries demonstrated good performance over the temperature range of 60° to 125°C. At these temperatures, an ionic conductivity of 0.001 S/cm was observed for fully amorphous solid polymer electrolytes. The use of these plasticized networks could yield ionic conductivities better than 0.001 S/cm even at room temperature (27°C). [Pg.301]

The case with which the plasticized networks arc ptoducabk and the prospect of using materials with higher spontaneous polarization make them aerioua candidates for highly birefringent transpaienl piezoelectrics. [Pg.516]

In the latter two cases, the endlock phase may extend as a continuous plastic network throughout the rubber matrix. This tends to be the case when the endblock phase concentration is above about 20%w. In this situation, as the sample is stretched, the initial stress is borne by the plastic network, and the stress-strain properties are greatly affected as discussed below. The existence of these different morphol-... [Pg.241]
