Serum follicle-stimulating hormone

Reduction in circulating oestrogen levels. Levels of serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) will be above 30 IU/L.

Seven men who were exposed for 6 hours/day for 5 days to 616 mg/m of vaporized white spirits (with a composition of 99% alkanes, as compared to 30-50% alkanes in Stoddard solvent) had a decrease (p<0.05) in serum follicle-stimulating hormone levels at 24 and 96 hours after the initiation of exposure as compared to pre-exposure levels (Pedersen and Cohr 1984b). This change did not correspond to blood or adipose levels of white spirits. No tests of reproductive function were performed. In another study, 11 men in a printing factory were occupationally exposed to a wide variety of solvents, including 294 mg/m of white spirits for 1-17 years. Sperm counts, motility, and morphology were monitored for 2 months, and all values were normal (Tuohimaa and Wichmann 1981).

Mechanism of Action A testosterone derivative that suppresses the pituitary-ovarian axis by inhibiting the output of pituitary gonadotropins. Causes atrophy of both normal and ectopic endometrial tissue in endometriosis. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) are depressed in fibrocystic breast disease. Inhibits steroid synthesis and binding of steroids to their receptors in breast tissues. Increases serum levels of esterase inhibitor. Therapeutic Effect Produces anovulation and amenorrhea, reduces the production of est rogen, corrects biochemical deficiency as seen in hereditary angioedema. 

These studies demonstrating a protective effect of sialic acid residues on serum glycoproteins provide an explanation for earlier, conflicting observations about the biological effect of, for example, desialylated erythropoietin, which stimulates erythropoiesis only after direct application to bone-marrow cell-cultures, and not after injection into the blood stream.469 In the latter experiment, only the native, sialylated hormone was active. Rapid clearance and inactivation of follicle-stimulating hormone,470 or interferon,471 after treatment with sialidase may be explained by uptake into liver cells. 

Thyroid Effects. Limited information is available on thyroid effects in PBDE-exposed humans. There are suggestive occupational data as shown by effects that included increased serum FSH, low or borderline low serum T4, and increased thyroid antimicrosomal antibody titers in workers exposed to decaBDE and/or unspecified PBBs. There was no clear association between plasma levels of 2,2, 4,4-tetraBDE and thyroid hormone levels (free and total T3 and T4, TSH, free testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, lutenizing hormone, and prolactin) in men who consumed varying amounts of fatty fish from the Baltic Sea. Based on consistent evidence in animals, as summarized below, the thyroid is particularly sensitive to PBDEs and is a likely target of toxicity in exposed humans.
