Availability of Materials. Availability of the candidate material is a very essential consideration in the decision-making process. There is no sense in specifying the use of a particular material if it cannot be obtained within the time constraints of the project. It is also advisable to select materials that are available from more than one supplier. If proprietary materials that are only available from one supplier are used, one can become a captive customer at the mercy of the supplier on cost and delivery. [Pg.1324]

In the majority of cases common sense, combined with basic engineering principles, should be sufficient to ensure good service from the tower on a continuous basis. The DOD and NASA programs generally involve an aerospace firm that works with material suppliers to develop a material for a specific performance goal. Uncertainty and disturbances can be described in terms of mathematical constraints defining a finite set of hounded regions for the allowable values of the uncertain parameters of the model and the parameters defining the disturbances. If uncertainty or disturbances were unbounded, it would not make sense to try to ensure satisfaction of performance requirements for all possible plant parameters and disturbances. If the uncertainty cannot be related mathematically to model parameters, the model cannot adequately predict the effect of uncertainty on performance. The simplest form of description arises when the model is developed so that the uncertainty and disturbances can be mapped to independent, bounded variations on model parameters. This last stage is not essential to the method, but it does fit many process engineering problems and allows particularly efficient optimization methods to be deployed.
