Homogeneous Catalysis, S. Bhaduri and D. Mukesh, Wiley-Interscience 2000, 239 pp., ISBN 0-471-37221-8. This introductory textbook emphasizes the practical side, with a chapter dedicated to chemical engineering basics and process unit operations. The authors cover several examples of industrial homogeneous catalysis processes. Although the book is aimed at graduate students, it contains relatively few references to the primary literature. Each chapter is accompanied by a good selection of review questions and problems.

This chapter provides a very elementary overview of the engineering basics of four important mass separation techniques. Fundamental concepts are stressed rather than actual equipment, largely because equipment and applications are often specific as opposed to off-the-shelf or standardized designs. The techniques are based on widely different separation techniques than those that rely on physical means, such as filtration, settling, centrifugation, and others. JAERI has developed the IS process step by step. The theory of the IS process was verified in 1997 with a lab-scale apparatus at the hydrogen production rate of INL/h. Since 2000, engineering basic studies have been carried out as follows. 

The science of mechanics constitutes a vast number of sub-disciplines commonly considered beyond the scope of the standard chemical engineering education. However, when dealing with kinetic theory-, granular flow- and population balance modeling in chemical reactor engineering, basic knowledge of the principles of mechanics is required. Hence, a very brief but essential overview of the disciplines of mechanics and the necessary prescience on the historical development of kinetic theory are given before the more detailed and mathematical principles of kinetic theory are presented.
