Segmented silicone rubber

The materials selected for evaluation included three materials currently being used in these applications Biomer (Thoratec Laboratories Corporation, Emeryville, CA), representative of segmented ether-type polyurethanes Avcothane-51 (Avco Everett Research Laboratory, Inc., Everett, MA), a block copolymer of 10% silicone rubber and 90% polyurethane and Hexsyn (Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, OH), a sulfur vulcanized hydrocarbon rubber that is essentially a polyhexene. Also selected, because of their easy availability, were Pellethane (Upjohn Company, North Haven, CT), an ether-type of polyurethane capable of being extruded in sheet form, and a butyl rubber formulation, compounded and molded at the National Bureau of Standards. The material thickness varied, but the sheets were generally about 1 mm thick. [Pg.534]

Cooper et al. [21, 22] reported in detail the results of their laborious work on the adsorption of four proteins human serum albumin (HSA), fibrinogen (FGN), fibronectin (FN), and vitronectin (VN), on five biomaterials polyethylene (PE), silicone rubber (SR), Teflon-FEP (FEP), poly(tetramethylene oxide)-poly-urethane (PTMO-PU), and polyethylene oxide)-polyurethane(PEO-PU). Hard segments of these polyurethanes are composed of a methylene-bis(p-phenylisocyanate) (MDI) chain extended wih 1,4-butanediol. [Pg.13]

For instance, the modification of silicone rubbers, poly-(tetrafluoroethylene), polyethylene, and segmented polyurethanes by ionic attachment of heparin was shown to result in a decrease of platelet adhesion onto these polymers71 74 75. A similar... [Pg.116]

Two segments are pulled out, one retaining the original curved shape and the other flattened out into a trapezoidal channel. Segmented Silicone Liquid Rubbers and Hybrid Composites... [Pg.90]

This investigation of silicone-modified hybrid composites demonstrates that compatibilized, segmented liquid rubbers can be tailored to promote the formation of colloidal rubber dispersions, which enhance the toughness of the epoxy matrix. Furthermore, such segmented liquid rubbers can in situ-modify filler surfaces to form core-shell particles with a hard filler core and a thin... [Pg.94]

Hot-melt thermoplastic elastomer systems (23. 24) are also effective coating materials. These materials are generally based on copolymers that are comprised of hard (crystalline or glassy) and rubbery (amorphous) segments contained in separate phases. The hard-phase regions form physical cross-links below their crystallization or vitrification temperature, and the system therefore has elastomeric properties. The moduli and low-temperature characteristics of these materials can be tailored to compare reasonably well with silicone rubbers at -40 C. However, they are limited in high-temperature applicability because of enhanced creep or flow due to softening. [Pg.921]

We used a new silane which readily permits quantitative conversion of silanol-terminated fluids into aminopropyl-terminated fluids. The reaction between aminopropyl-terminated fluids and diisocyanates proceeds smoothly within a few minutes, either in solution or in the melt. The preparation of siloxane-urea block copolymers is performed in either a two- or a three-component process. By carefrilly choosing the inorganic segment defined by the corresponding silicone fluid, it is possible to obtain silicone rubbers with different material characteristics. The mechanical properties can be tuned from very soft to very hard. Those materials display tensile strengths up to 14 MPa without requiring additional fillers and crm be used for diverse applications. [Pg.800]

A non-segmented extraction system, also based on membrane transfer, but using a silicone rubber tube as the membrane, was described by Melcher [30]. Aqueous samples are injected into a tubular cell which houses the membrane tube. Organic compounds in the sample permeate the silicone rubber membrane and arc collected in an extractant flowing through the bore of the membrane tube. The extractant is then delivered to the detector. [Pg.67]

One such polymer, Elast-Eon (AorTech International, Melbourne, Australia) has recently been used as an insulator for ICD leads (Riata ST Optim, St Jude, Syhnar, CA). This product is part of a large family of polyurethane-silicone rubber hybrids which can be prepared for the specific needs of the pacemaker/ ICD industry. An insulator with the strength of PeUethane 55D can be created with the characteristics of sihcone rubber by replacing the polyether soft segment of polyurethane with silicone rubber. [Pg.37]
