A protonic acid derived from a suitable or desired anion would seem to be an ideal initiator, especially if the desired end product is a poly(tetramethylene oxide) glycol. There are, however, a number of drawbacks. The protonated THF, ie, the secondary oxonium ion, is less reactive than the propagating tertiary oxonium ion. This results in a slow initiation process. Also, in the case of several of the readily available acids, eg, CF SO H, FSO H, HCIO4, and H2SO4, there is an ion—ester equiUbrium with the counterion, which further reduces the concentration of the much more reactive ionic species. The reaction is illustrated for CF SO counterion as follows ... [Pg.362]

Poly(tetramethylene oxide) polyols (PTMEG) are high performance polyethers that are crystalline waxes at molecular weights above 650 and liquids at lower molecular weights. They are only available as diols, but they produce adhesives with good hydrolysis resistance and moisture resistance, which is why these adhesives are even used in medical devices, blood bags, catheters, and heart-assist devices [25]. Certain thermoplastic polyurethane adhesives and solvent-borne adhesives are also based on PTMEG s. [Pg.770]

As an organic polymer, poly(tetramethylene oxide) was also used for the preparation of ceramers. The mechanical properties in these cases were much improved in comparison with those for hybrids from polysiloxanes. In these poly (tetramethylene oxide)-silica hybrids, the effect of the number of functional triethoxysilyl groups was examined [13]. As shown in Fig. 2, more multifunctional organic polymer produced more crosslinked hybrid networks. This means that the more rigid the structure in the hybrids is, the higher the modulus and the lower swelling property. [Pg.15]

By using a similar procedure for the preparation of hybrids of silica, hybrids materials consisting of other metal oxides were also prepared by the group of Wilkes [15]. For example, titania was incorporated into organic polymers by using the chemically controlled condensation (CCC) method for the preparation of poly(tetramethylene oxide)-silica or poly(dimethylsiloxane)-silica hybrids. Especially, in the case of the hybrid with poly (tetramethylene oxide), the modulus or ultimate strength of the hybrid increased in the presence of titania component, as shown in Table 3. This phenomenon was explained by the catalytic ability of... [Pg.15]

Poly(tetramethylene oxide) polyols (see Scheme 4.4) are a special class of polyethers syndiesized via acid-catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of tetrahy-drofuran. Although less susceptible to side reactions, the synthesis of these C4 ethers is less flexible in terms of product composition and structure. Thus, because of diis syndietic route, only two-functional glycols are available and copolymers are not readily available. Molecular weights of commercial C4 glycols range up to about 3000 g/m. [Pg.223]

An amine-terminated poly ether (ATPE) is prepared as follows. Charge poly(tetramethylene oxide) diol (PolyTHF 1000, BASF, 75.96 g, 0.0759 m) to a 500-mL three-neck round-bottom flask fitted with a thermocouple, a mechanical stirrer, and a vacuum port. Add tert-butylacetoacetate (24.04 g, 0.1582 m) and apply vacuum. Heat at 175° C for 4 h, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis should indicate complete loss of the polyol OH absorption at 3300 cm. The room temperature viscosity of the product should be about 520 mPa-s. React this acetoacetylated product (85.5 g, 0.0649 m) with cyclohexylamine (14.5 g, 0.1465 m) at 110° C under vacuum for several hours. Cool the resultant cyclohexylaminocrotonate poly ether product to room temperature (1790 mPa-s at room temperature). [Pg.255]

Materials and Purification. Chemicals were purchased from Aldrich chemical company and used as received unless otherwise noted 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyl disilazane, ethylene glycol, triphosgene, poly(ethylene oxide) (MW = 600), poly(tetramethylene oxide) (MW = 1000), poly(caprolactonediol) (MW = 530), toluene diisocyanate (TDI), anhydrous ethanol (Barker Analyzed), L-lysine monohydride (Sigma) and methylene bis-4-phenyl isocyanate (MDI) (Kodak). Ethyl ether (Barker Analyzer), triethylamine and dimethyl acetamide were respectively dried with sodium, calcium hydride and barium oxide overnight, and then distilled. Thionyl chloride and diethylphosphite were distilled before use. [Pg.142]
