The age dependence of deltamethrin metabolism in vitro, and toxic signs and blood levels of the neurotoxic parent compound following administration of deltamethrin at 10 mg/kg p.o. was investigated [35]. Metabolism was quantified in vitro by monitoring the disappearance of the parent compound from plasma (via CESs) and liver microsomes (via CESs and CYPs) obtained from 10-, 21-, and 40-day-old male SD rats. Mean intrinsic clearances (Vmax/Km) in these respective... [Pg.124]

P6 Atrazine (2-chloro-4-[ethylamino]-6-[isopropylamino]-l,3,5-triazine) is one of the most commonly used herbicides in North America and is frequently detected in ground and surface waters. This research investigated possible covalent modihcations of hemoglobin following in vivo exposures to atrazine in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats and in vitro incubations with diaminochlorotriazine. The effects of di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (1% of diet) on plasma lipids were evaluated in male Upjohn TUC (SD) rats (Bell, 1984). After two weeks and four weeks (but not seven weeks) of feeding, plasma cholesterol levels were significantly decreased. After four weeks (but not two or seven weeks) of feeding, plasma triglyceride levels were significantly decreased. Hepatic cholesterol s mthesis was diminished by di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate consumption (Bell, 1983, 1984). [Pg.158]

Groups of 20 or 30 male Wistar (Cij Wistar), WKY (WKY/NCq), Lewis (LEW/Crj) and SD (Crj CD) rats, six weeks of age, were administered catechol (> 99% pure) in the diet at 0 or 0.8% for 104 weeks. Weight gain was reduced in all exposed groups but no effect on survival was observed. In the forestomach, the incidence of hyperplasia was significantly increased in exposed Wistar, WKY and SD rats compared with controls. Papillomas occurred in 6/30 SD rats (p < 0.05), 2/30 Wistar rats and 1/30 WKY rats and carcinomas in 1/30 SD and 1/30 Wistar rats compared with none in controls. In the... [Pg.435]

None of the selected triazines showed any evidence of inducing tumors in mice, despite high feeding levels doses ranged from 87 to 1140mg/kg/day and were equal to or exceeded the MTD. The chloro-.v-triazines (e.g., atrazine, cyanazine, propazine, and simazine) resulted in either an increased incidence or an earlier onset of mammary tumors when administered to female SD rats at high feeding levels, as presented in Table 25.7. [Pg.390]

The thiomethyl- and mcthoxy-v-triazines, as well as the asymmetrical triazine metribuzin, were not carcinogenic -some even in the SD rat - and at feeding levels exceeding the MTD the exception was terbutryn, where an increased incidence of mammary, thyroid, and liver tumors were observed in female SD rats at feeding levels that exceeded the MTD. [Pg.390]

The SD rat is a commonly used laboratory animal. However, it has limitations when used to evaluate the effects of chemicals on the endocrine system, including the pituitary and mammary gland, because of a high spontaneous tumor incidence in these organs. At about 9-12 months of age, the SD rat begins to experience prolonged periods... [Pg.390]

The reproductive aging process observed in the female SD rat is unique and is apparently specific to certain out-bred strains and species. Thus, other strains of rats, like the inbred F-344, do not demonstrate this deficiency and do not have a high spontaneous incidence of mammary or pituitary tumors (Eldridge et al, 1998). [Pg.393]

Detailed studies on atrazine have shown that F-344 rats administered high doses of atrazine do not develop either an increased incidence or an early onset of mammary tumors (Wetzel et al, 1994 Thakur et al, 1998), unlike the findings noted in similarly treated female SD rats (Stevens et al, 1994 Wetzel et al, 1994 Hauswirth and Wetzel, 1998). Furthermore, when ovarian estrogen was eliminated from the female SD rats by surgical removal of the ovaries, no mammary tumors were found (Stevens et al, 1999). Likewise, atrazine is not carcinogenic in mice or male SD rats (Hauswirth and Wetzel, 1998). [Pg.393]
