Scientific Advisory Board

In 1988, the Scientific Advisory Board for the EPA offered an opinion that the weight-of-evidence was on a C-B2 continuum (possible-probable human carcinogen). The cancer classification is currently under review by EPA (IRIS 1996). 

The current accessible information from this company do not show any records on BDS activities, the most recent recorded event correspond to 2000 activities. On November 14, 2001, their report announced a restructuring process of the Company s Scientific Advisory Board, replacing members with scientists and physicians with experience in cancer, production of therapeutic proteins, preclinical development and clinical trials. That indication for a new orientation and focus to the health sector did not last enough, and soon after, the company disappeared from the SEC (and any other financial) listing.

The author, Professor Jiri Matousek, PhD, DSc., Dipl. Eng., was working nearly 40 years in R D for Chemical Corps, Medical Services and Civil Protection, inter alia as Head of the Czechoslovak NBC Defence R D Establishment (now Military Technical Institute of Protection, Bmo) and a member of the Czechoslovak Delegation to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. He is currently chairman of the OPCW Scientific Advisory Board. 

Jean-Marc Sabatier has a Ph.D. and HDR in biochemistry. He is the director of research at the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). He heads a research laboratory (ERT 62) entided Engineering of Therapeutic Peptides at the Universite de la Mediterranee, in Marseilles, France. He also holds the position of a senior director (discovery research — peptides) for a public company in Canada. Dr. Sabatier works in the field of animal toxins, and leads the venom peptide group of the International Neuropeptide Society. He also designs immunomodulatory and antiviral drugs, as well as contributes to the field of peptide and protein engineering. He has contributed more than 100 scientific articles, 180 communications, and 43 patents. He is a member of several scientific advisory boards of journals (e.g.. Peptides, Biochemical Journal), and has reviewed articles submitted for publication in more than 30 specialized international journals. 

Danilo Corradini is research director at the Institute of Chemical Methodologies of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and a member of the General Scientific Advisory Board of CNR. His involvement in separation science started in 1976 with his research work on chromatography and electrophoresis for his PhD studies in chemistry, which was carried out at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, under the direction of Michael Lederer, founder and first editor of the Journal of Chromatography. In 1983-1984, he worked with Csaba Horvath, the pioneer of HPLC, at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, where he initiated his first investigations on the HPLC of proteins and peptides, which he continued at the Institute of Chromatography of CNR after he returned to Italy.

The definitions and criteria that determine whether a chemical falls within the scope of the CWC or not, leaves a large number of chemicals in the gray area. One example of a group of chemicals that are excluded from the OCAD on the basis of purposes not prohibited under this Convention , is given by the Riot Control Agents . There are other examples, which need to be addressed in the future to determine how they can be regulated by the CWC as these have been seen to be very useful in the verification activities of the OPCW. Efforts are underway to find a way for the inclusion in the OCAD, of chemicals that are relevant to the CWC but are not covered by the schedule list (Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) and Validation Group (VG)). 

Dr. Mesilaakso is currently Acting Director of the Finnish Institute for Verification of the Chemical Weapons Convention (VERIFTN former CW Project) at the University of Helsinki. Before this, he worked at VERIFIN as a Research Scientist, Quality Manager and Research Director. He is a member of the Finnish National Authority of the CWC, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Defense of Finland, and a member of the OPCW Validation Group for data evaluation to the OPCW Central Analytical Database. 

Hackerman quickly rose through the academic ranks at UT and served as chairman of the chemistry department (1952-62), dean of research and sponsored programs (1961-62), vice president and provost (1962), vice chancellor of academic aifairs (1963-67), and university president (1967-70). In 1970,hejoinedthefacultyofRice University as a professor of chemistry and president of the university, holding both appointments until his retirement in 1985. Beginning in 1982 and continuing until 2005 Hackerman chaired the Scientific Advisory Board of the Robert A. Welch Foundation, which had a large impact on fundamental chemical research in the state of Texas.

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), in its study of developments in the production of CWC-relevant chemicals, concluded that OCPFs are the area where the impact of recent technological developments was most relevant, and recommended that it would be prudent to increase the number of inspections of such facilities. ...
