The high sodium ion concentration results in facile crystallisation of the sodium salt. This process of salting out with common salt may be used for recrystallisation, but sodium benzenesulphonate (and salts of other acids of comparable molecular weight) is so very soluble in water that the solution must be almost saturated with sodium chloride and consequently the product is likely to be contaminated with it. An aqueous PVA solution containing a small amount of boric acid may be extmded into an aqueous alkaline salt solution to form a gel-like fiber (15,16). In this process, sodium hydroxide penetrates rapidly into the aqueous PVA solution extmded through orifices to make it alkaline, whereby boric acid cross-links PVA molecules with each other. Sodium bicarbonate may be prepared by the ammonia-salt (Solvay) process. Carbon dioxide is passed through a solution of sodium chloride in ammonia water. Ammonium Ion Removal. A fixed-bed molecular-sieve ion-exchange process has been commercialized for the removal of ammonium ions from secondary wastewater treatment effluents. This application takes advantage of the superior selectivity of molecular-sieve ion exchangers for ammonium ions. The first plants employed clinoptilolite as a potentially low cost material because of its availability in natural deposits. The bed is regenerated with a lime-salt solution that can be reused after the ammonia is removed by pH adjustment and air stripping. In the Godrej-Lurgi process, olefins are produced by dehydration of fatty alcohols on alumina in a continuous vapor-phase process. The reaction is carried out in a specially designed isothermal multitube reactor at a temperature of approximately 300°C and a pressure of 5—10 kPa (0.05—0.10 atm). As the reaction is endothermic, temperature is maintained by circulating externally heated molten salt solution around the reactor tubes. The purified acid is recovered from the loaded organic stream by contacting with water in another countercurrent extraction step. In place of water, an aqueous alkafl can be used to recover a purified phosphate salt solution. A small portion of the purified acid is typically used in a backwashing operation to contact the loaded organic phase and to improve the purity of the extract phase prior to recovery of the purified acid. Some phosphides, such as titanium phosphide [12037-65-9] TiP, can be prepared bypassing phosphine over the metal or its haUde. Reaction of phosphine with heavy metal salt solutions often yields phosphines that may contain unsubstituted hydrogens. Of the four commercial processes for the purification of carbon monoxide two processes are based on the absorption of carbon monoxide by salt solutions, the third uses either low temperature condensation or fractionation, and the fourth method utilizes the adsorption of carbon monoxide on a soHd adsorbent material. Solution Process. With the exception of fibrous triacetate, practically all cellulose acetate is manufactured by a solution process using sulfuric acid catalyst with acetic anhydride in an acetic acid solvent. An excellent description of this process is given (85). In the process (Fig. 8), cellulose (ca 400 kg) is treated with ca 1200 kg acetic anhydride in 1600 kg acetic acid solvent and 28—40 kg sulfuric acid (7—10% based on cellulose) as catalyst. During the exothermic reaction, the temperature is controlled at 40—45°C to minimize cellulose degradation. After the reaction solution becomes clear and fiber-free and the desired viscosity has been achieved, sufficient aqueous acetic acid (60—70% acid) is added to destroy the excess anhydride and provide 10—15% free water for hydrolysis. At this point, the sulfuric acid catalyst may be partially neutralized with calcium, magnesium, or sodium salts for better control of product molecular weight. [Pg.254]

These solutions are employed in concentrations of 3—15% in various bleaching and sanitising appHcations. Chlorination of 50% caustic and removal of precipitated salt produces a concentrated, low salt solution (32% NaOCl, 6% NaCl), which is used as a process intermediate in Ca(OCl)2 manufacture. Copper Hydroxide. Copper(II) hydroxide [20427-59-2] Cu(OH)2, produced by reaction of a copper salt solution and sodium hydroxide, is a blue, gelatinous, voluminous precipitate of limited stabiUty. The thermodynamically unstable copper hydroxide can be kiaetically stabilized by a suitable production method. Usually ammonia or phosphates ate iacorporated iato the hydroxide to produce a color-stable product. The ammonia processed copper hydroxide (16—19) is almost stoichiometric and copper content as high as 64% is not uncommon. The phosphate produced material (20,21) is lower ia copper (57—59%) and has a finer particle size and higher surface area than the ammonia processed hydroxide.
