In addition to these issues, others that need to be considered include plutonium handling, waste disposal, environmental regulations, safety regulations and analysis, safeguards and security, technology development, economic analysis, and government and public policies. A variety of reactor concepts exists, and each concept has unique and specific concerns. ACC has published a resource guide to aid member companies in implementing the Responsible Care Process Safety Code (ACC, 1989). The purpose of this text is to educate and provide awareness to the safety professional with regard to a number of laws within labor, employment, and related areas that may impact him or her in the course of his or her daily activities. Safety professionals are not expected to become lawyers or even human resource professionals, but they must have a rudimentary knowledge of these laws to avoid stepping on their tail. Simple recognition of the law and the basic requirements of the specific law can often permit safety professionals to avoid a potential pitfall or violation in their actions or inactions. [Pg.245]

Appendix B introduces the concept of the Laboratory Chemical Safety Summary (LCSS), which is specifically tailored to the needs of the laboratory worker. As indicated in their name, LCSSs provide information on chemicals in the context of laboratory use. These documents are summaries and are not intended to be comprehensive or to fulfill the needs of all conceivable users of a chemical. In conjunction with the guidelines described in this chapte, the LCSS provides essential information required to assess the risks associated with the use of a particular chemical in the laboratory. [Pg.39]
