Safety dashboards

A measurement statistic that may be utilized to evaluate the safety performance of an organization by management. Lagging indicators are commonly incident statistics, such as injuries, fatalities, motor vehicle accidents (MVAs), fires, etc., and are considered lagging due to the fact that they materialize after the incidents occur. Safety Dashboard Typically an intranet webpage of an organization which features various safety statistics (e.g., leading and lagging indicators). These are arranged in a dial or graph format, in which real-time statistics (i.e., weekly, monthly reports) are compared to stated... 

Mazda and others have been working on advanced safety vehicles with monitor screens to show rear and side views, voice-interactive navigation systems and collision avoidance technology. The Ford 24.7 concept car had a computer console in the dashboard with Internet access that is voice-activated. 

As discussed in Chapter 6, dashboards will increasingly be used to communicate process safety metrics and performance to local line management. Such dashboards may reflect current, summary, or cumulative data (such as the number of days without a leak), current conditions (such as the fill level of a tank), or the results of the most current inspection or audit. An organization s process safety metrics can evolve in a hierarchical way so that individual indicators can be rolled up from the process level to the site level and eventually even the organizational level. Dashboards can be expected to evolve similarly to report such rolled up information to upper management. 

The safety case is not a dashboard of data or a set of performance metrics. Many thousands of safety professionals are employed in organizations that use performance measurement systems such as the Balanced Score-card, Dashboards, Results-Based Management, Performance Prism, or others. Since it is important that they be perceived as members of the management team and participants in attaining management goals, they also have scorecards for safety and environmental performance. 

In March 2007, the American Society of Safety Engineers held a Symposium on Measuring Performance for Safety Success. Scorecards, Dashboards, and other reporting systems were mentioned. Gerald A. Turner, Senior Associate at The Balanced Scorecard Institute, was a key speaker. His subject was Using the Balanced Scorecard to Achieve Health Safety Performance Excellence. ... 

In a given situation, though, safety professionals can benefit from action guidelines in the development of leading and lagging indicators and in creating a Scoreboard/Dashboard.
