Special adaptive equipment requirements increase with the degree of impairment and desired degree of independence in areas such as personal care, mobility, leisure, personal transportation, and employment. People are concerned that they receive the proper equipment for them to safely operate their vehicle. Access and egress equipment have the greatest maintenance requirements. Other devices such as hand controls, steering equipment, securement mechanisms, and interior controls require less maintenance. Most users of adaptive driving equipment are satisfied with the performance of such equipment. Most frequent equipment problems are minor and are repaired by consumers themselves. [Pg.1149]

Although bolstered by the value judgements of reasonably practicable, the state of safety for access and egress is here supplemented by suitable and sufficient. This is an echo of earlier legislation - perhaps not as prescriptive as it once was, but certainly a more detailed construction of safe than that found within the 1974 Act itself (see 012.2(d)). [Pg.82]

The safety of personnel transfers depends on many factors. The type of shore facility, the access site on the transfer vessel, the foundation and transition piece, and weather and sea conditions (waves, wind, and currents) influence whether safe access or egress is possible and the type of access system or vessel used. To minimize risk and maximize efficiency, any type of transfer vessel will need to nose into place easily and quickly rest safely in position at the transfer point and transfer personnel and equipment quickly, safely, and reliably. Above all, any personnel transfer system should maximize safety and minimize complexity. [Pg.91]
