The current Russian programme is largely based on 1000 MWe units but the 500-600 MW range is well represented in the development programme. Two units of 600 MWe each are planned in the Far East region of the country for the period 2000-2010. Two others in Karel ska are planned for the same period. 

By October 1949 the Air Staff was more ambitious, arguing that the Allies only hope was to bring about a collapse of the Russian warmaking machine by means of a strategic air offensive, and that Britain s contribution would ensure success. Russia inherited the world s largest declared stockpile of chemical weapons, over 40,000 metric tons, from the Soviet Union. The Russian government has identified chemical weapons destruction as one of its two priority areas of concern for the G-8 Global Partnership accord against the spread of weapons of mass destruction. Although issues of economics have often dominated what has been said and written about the disposal programme, lack of local community support is also cited as a major political obstacle. Many of the same concerns detailed extensively by US citizens are also asserted by Russian citizens. Foremost is concern about the detrimental effects of chemical weapons destruction on public health and the environment . ... 

In addition to the amounts of civil plutonium, plutonium is being released from dismantled warheads. Under the START-I and -II Treaties, many thousands of US and Russian nuclear war-heads are slated to be retired within the next decade. As a result, at least 50 tonnes of plutonium from each side are expected to be removed from military programmes.
