Farmi. Enrico (1901-54) Italian-born US physicist He became a professor at Rome University, where in 1934 he discovered how to produce slow (thermal) neutrons. He used these to create new radioisotopes, for which he was awarded the 1938 Nobel Prize. In 1938 he and his Jewish wife emigrated to the USA. In 1942 he led the team that built the first atomic pile (nuclear reactor) in Chic o. Fermi was an influential theoretical physicist who, independently of Paul Dirac, discovered Fermi-Dirac statistics. He also proposed the first proper theory of weak interactions. [Pg.317]

Enrico Fermi was both a brilliant theorist and an unusually gifted experimentalist — a combination of talents seldom found among twentieth-century physicists. Born in 1901 in Rome, Fermi obtained his doctor s degree in physics magna cum laude from the University of Pisa at the age of 21, with a dissertation on x-rays. [Pg.499]

Fermi lived only a little more than a decade after his hour of triumph. He spent most of this time at the University of Chicago, where, as in Rome, he surrounded himself with a group of outstanding gi aduate students, many of whom also later received Nobel Prizes. Fermi died of stomach cancer in 1954, but his name remains attached to many of the important contributions he made to physics. For example, element 100 is now called Fermium. [Pg.500]

Stanis la o Ca n n izza ro (1826-1910) was born in Palermo, Sicily, the son of the chief of police. He studied at the University of Pisa under Rafaelle Piria and also worked in Peris with Michei-Eugene Chevreul. As a youth, he took part in the Sicilian revolution of 1848 and was at one point condemned to death. He was professor of chemistry at the universities of Genoa, Palermo, and Rome and is best known for being the first to clarify the distinction between atoms and molecules. [Pg.724]

Giulio Natta (1903-1979) was born in Imperia, near Genoa, Italy, and received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Milan Polytechnic in 1924. After holding positions at the universities of Pavia, Rome, and Turin, he returned to Milan in 1938 as professor of industrial chemistry. For his work on developing methods of polymer synthesis, he shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in chemistry with Karl Ziegler. [Pg.1209]
