The main index headings for search other than the names of specific compounds are Paraffins nitration of Paraffins, nitro Paraffins, from nitration of— Paraffins, dinitro Hydrocaibons, nitration of Nitration of hydrocarbons Nitration of paraffins Petroleum, nitrogen compounds from Olefins, nitro derivatives and Acetylenes, nitro derivatives. These items are not mutually inclusive, e.g., references under Paraffins, nitration of are not necessarily to be found under Nitration of paraffins. In Chemical Abstracts collective index for 1937 to 1946, there are 19 entries under the first heading and 12 entries under the second only 10 are common to both lists. 

There are a variety of text sources for biomedical text mining (see table 6.1). Abstract collections are the text sources, or corpora, that are easiest to access. One can also collect full-text patent collections from the various resellers or from the Patent Authorities directly (U.S. Patent Office, European Patent Office, World Intellectual Property Office, etc.). Other sources include full-text journal articles, Web documents, and news articles. 

Other abstract sources include various conference abstracts available on the Internet, such as the American Association of Cancer Research [8], the premier Biosis [9], and EMBASE [10] abstract collections. There is significant overlap between the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Biosis abstract collections. MEDLINE is focused more on medical journals, including biology journals that support medical research. EMBASE is also focused on medical research but includes more conference abstracts and European journals. Biosis is more focused on basic life sciences. 

Quosa [13] (see fig. 6.3) is a product that may provide a solution to generating small corpora from the licensed content available to the text-mining researcher. Quosa allows the searching of full-text and abstract collection indices and subsequent downloading of full-text journals associated with the search results. The application of mathematics to the physical sciences requires taking these abstract collections of numbers and the associated mathematics and relating them to the physical world. Thus, the x s and y s in the above graph could just as easily be pressures or volumes or temperatures describing a gas, or any pair of physical variables that are related to each other. 

The World Patent Index of Derwent Information Ltd. is a broad collection of international value-added patent documents from 40 patent-issuing authorities. The bibliographic database contains 11.6 million patent records with 5.5 million images (October, 2002) and grows by 1.5 million patent documents each year. The classified and indexed documents (since 1963) are sometimes provided wdth additional abstracts or significant titles. 

Chemisches Zentrallblatt. This periodical, published by the Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft to 1945, originated in 1830 as the Phar-maceutisches Zentrallblatt, the name was changed in 1850 to Chemisches-Pharmaceutisches Centrallblatt, again in 1856 to Chemisches Centrall-blatt, and in 1907 to Chemisches Zentrallblatt. Collective indexes are available from 1870. The abstracts, particularly for organic chemistry, are very detailed to 1939. 

Quite naturally there is a certain amount of arbitrariness in this system, although the lUPAC nomenclature is followed. The preferred Chemical Abstracts index names for chemical substances have been, with very few exceptions, continued unchanged (since 1972) as set forth in the Ninth Collective Index Guide and in a journal article. Any revisions appear in the updated Index Guide new editions appear at 18-month intervals. Appendix VI is of particular interest to chemists. Reprints of the Appendix may be purchased from Chemical Abstracts Service, Marketing Division, P.O. Box 3012, Columbus, Ohio 43210. 

Documentation abstracts, useful as they are, may also prove inadequate for final decisions, which would make it necessary for the searcher to obtain and examine copies of full patent specifications. Although the increasing availabihty of sets of full specifications on CD-ROM at modest cost is making it easier for searchers to have in their collections copies of those specifications they might need to consult, the necessity to go beyond computer output, whether to abstracts or full specifications, is stiU one of the bottlenecks of computer searching, and therefore an area in which significant new developments are hoped for.
