Rice bran wax

Rice-Bran Wax. Rice-bran wax [8016-60-2] is extracted from cmde rice-bran oil. It can be degummed, the fatty acid content reduced by solvent extraction, and bleached. The wax is primarily composed of esters of lignoceric acid (43 wt %), behenic acid (16 wt %), and 22 02 alcohols (28 wt %). Rice-bran wax may be used in some food apphcations under the regulations described in 21 CFR 172.890. [Pg.315]

Rice wax or rice bran wax is a by-product of the milling of rice. It is commonly used as a coating on food for sale, in chocolate, and as a base for lipstick and other cosmetics. [Pg.90]

Rice Bran Wax occurs as a hard, slightly crystalline substance that ranges in color from tan to light brown. It is a refined wax obtained from rice bran. It is soluble in chloroform, but is insoluble in water. [Pg.386]

Attempts have been made to recover the wax using cold and hot extraction (2). Wax yields of 1.29-1.82% of the crade oU are obtained. Continuous dewaxing of rice bran oil by chilling the oil or miscella to less than 20°C followed by filtration through plate and frame filters is practiced. Kinsey and Hummell (44) reported on the use of sodium silicate as an aid for dewaxing. The characteristics and physical properties of a purified rice bran wax are similar to carnauba wax (45). [Pg.1115]

Unlike protein and polysaccharides, lipid and resin are not polymers so they could not form stand-alone films. Edible lipids include waxes and oils for example, paraffin wax, beeswax (BW), candelilla wax, camauba wax, rice bran wax, jojoba oil, triglycerides (milkfat fractions), fatty acids, fatty alcohols, and sucrose fatty acid esters. Resins include shellac and terpene (Krochta, 2002). Due to their hydrophobic nature, lipid-based films and coatings exhibit high water resistance and low surface energy (Han and Gennadios, 2005). Generally, edible lipids have been incorporated into proteins and polysaccharides as emulsion or multilayer composite films to improve moisture barrier. [Pg.176]
